it seems as if a unit suffers heavy casualties they will gain ranks quickly.

not sure exactly why it happens. since the times of RTW, unit experience has been generally the average of all the men in the unit. if a unit of 100 soldiers were very experienced, and 70 died, upon being retrained the experience of that unit would be reduced since the 70 fresh replacements brought the average way down.

in NTW, while your unit is being replenished, the experience stays the same. i am guessing that the high amount of sudden experience after suffering casualties is due to the experience of the survivors since they now make up most of the average. replenishment doesn't reduce this high experience when the unit is filled with 'new recruits'.

Im pretty sure its based on number of kills, or kills to deaths ratio...

I have seen many times my units gaining experience during a battle, and many times they dont sustain hardly any casualties so im sure thats not what makes them gain XP.

Also i believe this is the first TW game that actually shows you during a battle if your units gain XP i really like this new system

Actually, previous Total War games (I only know as far back as Rome) also show experience gains although it's somewhat more subtle. In games before Napoleon, the unit gaining experience would get a sort of aura of light for a few second, although I'm afraid I can't provide a screenshot for you so you'll just have to look out for it.

Secondly, you can get around the logical problem presented in the original post by imagining that the veterans in the regiment would help train the raw recruits up to their level (this is actually what happened in the Grande Armée; Napoleon was careful to distribute veterans fairly evenly). The fact that units gain experience much more easily than in other Total War games helps to highlight the fact that Napoleon had troops with him at Waterloo who had fought beside him in Italy, although admittedly not very many by that stage. Napoleon was a great believer in the value of experience and took great pains to speak to his men and to get to know them. As such, I believe the more rapid experience system helps to remove some of the anonymity that other titles suffered from in terms of elite troops as their experience would be diminished by retraining. This way, you can really build up an elite fighting force in the manner that France did. That was one of the reasons that France in this period was so successful; constant war gives you a lot of battle-hardened veterans.

On that note, anyone got any idea what the exp requirements are?

Replenishment doesn't reduce XP, which may contribute performance of CPU. I am not sure if I like it or not, as it looks gamey to see new replenishment become as experienced as veteran, but it's true it made game very simple. Anyway, now I don't need to worry about losing veterans - they will simply replenish with one click. Being that said, NTW lost one very unique feature in series.

I have seen some units loose a bit of experience if they've taken a lot of casualties once they get over 3 experience, so it could be that they raised the experience level of the replacements in some way. It does seem though that the experience loss is less than it has been in previous Total War games.

If it went by merit, you would stay out, and the dog would go in.

I was going to say that I'm pretty sure I've seen multiple ranks lost to replenishment. It does seem faster, but I still don't see many line units past 5 xp...arty seems to hit 5 quickly.

Xp is for both kills and losses. i know to get the first exp chevron is 50 kills, but each chevron requires more kills as u go along.

u can also get exp for losses though. in a MP game one unit lost 95 men and killed 33 and had 1 chevron

Is it actually for losses though - or is the amount killed just divided among the survivors?
