Default Dying generals and wounded Napoleon

I am playing the Napoleon campain and I am only in Italy so far. I do not see much purpose in playing the battles, so I am choosing the auto resolve almost always. However, even if I got vastly superior forces my generals die almost all the time. Also Napoleon is getting wounded every second time or even more often.

So I am putting only one general in each attack against a city or against an army to keep them longer alive. The best messure to keep Napoleon in field seems to be to save and reload the game whenever he is wounded. Anybody got another tip on how to keep generals alive, beside for the apparent thing to play the battles all the time?

Well really it defeats the purpose of the game to Auto Assign but i guess the BAI can get quite annoying sometimes. But unless you make the odds really big that you will lose then im afraid you wont be able to do much in keeping you Generals alive.

The AI is suicidal with it generals, so ofc it does the same to you when it controls your army in auto resolve. I auto resolve sometimes and haven't lost a general for ages.

i auto resolve because it give exp to all my troops
but you can take your general out of the army when they attack and put them back in if you dont want to fight the battle yourself
