need help for 2 gameplay problems

Well, I've just fiinished a campaign at VH/VH and I figured out 2 sproblems during the game.
1: No more "man of honour" ?
From the beginning to the end of the campaign, I gained no generals from my victories (85% of all battles). Even I have winning streak number to dozens, either clear victories or heroic victories, I could never get a "man of honor". All new generals come from royal families and marriages, the spawning was quite frequent so i wasn't lacking of big men but the feeling of getting them from battles make it more interesting, do you agree? BTW, i thought the number of generals was limited but maybe is there a way to get it more reasonable?
2: the unfair excommunication!
When a catholic faction attacked me, the war continued for a few turns before I got an order to cease fire from the Pope. The thing is if I attack, I would be excommunicated but if the enemy did, he would not be. That's not just about the difficulty of the game but this burned all my strategies to provoke the enemy and trick him to get excommunicated. May be this is not a big prob with you guys but I just mention it to discuss if we could have some edits.

I even got sometimes lower reputation by the pope (lost crosses) when I defended myself on my own territory, there is something strange...

I think that if you are attacked by a faction that has more favor with the pope than you do, he will not be excommunicated, even if he keeps attacking you. You must be on the big man's favor to have him excommunicating your enemy.

Counterattacking enemy army to break siege might be solid tactic from Confucius manual of war but in the eyes of Holy Father, you would are aggressor. Holy Father meant when he said that you SHALL NOT ATTACK AND SHALL STOP ALL AGGRESSION AGAINST SOME FRACTION OR BURN IN HELL. LOL You must go on pure defensive. Your faith in the god is being tested. LOL
