Siege army mysteriously loses (hotseat)

I'm playing a hotseat game as France... I'm beseiging 3 cities with superior armies, 2 of the armies are without a leader, one has a leader... I'm waiting for the towns to surrender, finnaly I come to the "1 more turn" - suddenly, when my turn's up, all my armies are far away from the city as if they retreated, all units are at half strength and the other half is now part of a rebel army in front of the city I was laying siege to.

WTF? I'm not below with money, although I'm pretty low on funds. Why is this happening?

Update: It seems that when the AI decides to counter-attack my sieging army, it is auto-resolved without even notifiying me let alone asking me. Auto resolve is OFF in the game settings! And not only that - I always lose

Is this a bug or is it a hotseat thing?

Its a hotseat thing. Search for "how to defend in hotseat" or similar and you'll find a topic on how to disable this. If you already did that ... - then I am at a loss
