Yes, it is as bad as any popular music in any country.

Edit: This is not too bad.

    But I prefer this.

I adore J Pop, they try harder sometimes with their music than their counter parts in the west though the Lyric lacks, but I don't know Japanese well enough to understand the lyrics.

Plus there is nonthing wrong with Gackt!!! He re-did a lot of the music from classic Gundam into Gackt form. He is a Gundam fan, even yelled sieg zeon out to fans once only getting them to reply back it was quite funny.

Gackt - Setsugetsuka (sometimes he tries too hard... x.x so loud my ears)

Gackt version of Ai Senshi (original was from the 2nd Gundam movie)

    Edit:

*laughs* this used to be popular amongst anime fans during my Generation anyways, don't hear many mention it anymore.

White Reflection (made popular with US anime fans because it was the pop song slapped Gundam Wing Endless Waltz) lol

Haha English remake of Ai Senshi by Richie Kotzen whom ever he is... lol

Gackt isn't J-pop. He's firmly J-rock, which generally is bad except for a few token bands and artists.

Japanese pop, on the other hand, tends to be better- might be my bias speaking, since most anime opening and ending themes are pop songs. But it usually is less idiotic than American pop music, and there are some genuinely good Japanese pop artists- the aforementioned TWO-MIX being a prominent example.

When looking at any genre of any medium, though, you should always keep in mind Sturgeon's Law- 90% of everything is crud.

Never only outside of Japan is 90% of everything crud, in Japan it's 89% of everything is crud. Two Mix did the theme songs for Gundam Wing, curse them! If it wasn't for those songs I wouldn't of had my first Japanese song stuck in my head. White Reflection is still one of my favorites.

    Yeah
Although to be frank, most south asian guys don't listen to pop for fun, it's considered sort of girly in our culture

Nah, South Asians might be good at choreography, but overall east asians are way better.

Is anyone familiar with more "classic" Japanese music from the 70s and 80s? I've heard some which pleased me, but I have no idea what they are. I'm thinking of ballads.
