They should be under the same excommunication threat as you - I'm guessing they started out higher in favor than you and can therefor attack longer before acutally beeing excommincated (attacking after exco threats when in high favor leads in the loss of 5 crosses for me, but not always successfully so).
Then I asked for a crusade against Gaza because I needed to reduce army upkeep for a few turns, and sailed a large crusader army to Gaza,
I'm guessing you had your first problems here with deserters or threads of desertion - I always go by land because of a bug thats still unresolved I believe. Going by see forces you to move away from targets like Gaza which then gets treated by the engine as "not enough progress on march to target" invoking the desertion penalty.
It has a big army (unlike Jerusalem that allways seems to be empty when you crusade that place ) and when they sally they allways win, for some reason my general allways dies upon first contact no matter the manner of fighting, even when charging their allready engaged arab cavalry.
If you are early in the game there should be many targets of opportunity when you crusade over land (all rebel cities can be attacked) which might get you a easier target then gaza next time around.
I retreated tot the fleet because I could never win that battle but then after clicking end turn, my men deserted.
Is the army leadership (general) still alive? Are the units already marked as in danger of desertion (crosses with red stripe or something like that)? How far did you retreat? Normally a specific area around the crusade target should be "safe" fromt what I remember preventing desertions from happening to crusaders in that zone.
So
- Is there a win battle cheat? and how does it work?
But I would advice you to take the losses and play on without that as it looks to me like your position is undefendable even if you win the first battle. And if you win and retreat the powerful units from there you will be stuck with high upkeep units that will have no impact on the homefront whatsoever for many turns.
