I would like to ask about your battles.
Certainly you had moments, when you see, you are almost defeated by your enemy / enemies in battle!
But then are you gonna do your trick and you move one or more units to first line and start killing your enemies.
I had in one battle that problem, they almost killed my and then I took my old guards and young guards, french most
expensive and strongest units and they saved my day, they routed all enemy units and I won that battle.
So the question is, what units are saved your day in battles when you are almost defeated by enemy?

AI almost defeated me yesterday, they flanked me very hardly. My luck was that they didnt had any cavalry. But my old guards and young guards did good work.

I all ways have three cav in reserve to come to the rescue if things get bad... Do to they can get from one side to the other side of the battle map faster than any other unit. All ways works. Flanks start wavering, send in the CAV. The center starts to go send in the CAV. Enemy Art killing the hell out of my lines, send in the cav. The Enemy General gets too close to my lines, send in the cav...

I always have 3 units of reserve (usually 2 calv and 1 line or any mix of 3 really) so i send them to area needed most after initial push.

I was close to defeat once. I had only 3 ragged militia units and one horse artillery unit left (half strength) and my general was long gone. What I did was I I looked for a hill near the end of the map. I was lucky enough, and this battlefield had a narrow route "out of the map" if you see what I mean. I pressed all my militia units into the route and placed the cannons a bit higher up on the hill. The results? Close Victory. I managed to hold them off until they ran out of courage almost like a scene from 300! Was awesome, and I felt good all day.

I usually keep my cav and two inf units behind the front lines in the battle. If the line kollapses, i fill the whole with fresh reserves or push em back with cav

Outnumbered, pressed from all sides and fought valiantly until my ammunition ran dry, units routing left and right, finally down to my last line infantry who I put into a square and they held off 2 infantry units, a dragoons and the general's bodyguard, by the end of the fight they were the only unit on both sides left on the field. I absolutely loved that battle.

would be a great thing if the computer recognised an epic effort from a unit and awarded it as such...above the chevron thing that is
    "Hard pressed on my right.
My center is yielding. Impossible to maneuver.
Situation excellent, I am attacking!" -Ferdinand Foch

If you play france. Do like Napoleon did, old and young guards are last soldier, who go into action.

I was attacked by a French army under the command of Marshal Ney. They had managed to break all but three units in my army because of their cavalry getting behind my lines (Because my Dragoons ran off from artillery). However i had two units of British lightfoot infantry and a unit of riflemen (The 95th as i named them) on a large hill on the right flank of my army. They managed to hold of the entire French army and kill over 60% of it!! Luckily for me their cavalry had been greatly depleated because of the efforts of a regiment of Grenadiers. Their army broke when Ney and his bodyguard attempted to charge me, and he was killed in a volley by the 95th. It was a close victory and a very bloody one (Esecially due to me using the larger unit sizes mod). I had lost some 4500 men, and the french had lost about 6500, with about 3000 of those kills to the defence of the hill.

When i was playing as France, hannover (which only had its original garrison of 2 line infantry, 1 artillery the general and a whole load of armed citizens) was attacked by a fairly large prussian army, which had large numbers of cavalry and artillery. I used the armed citizens as a human shield for my line infantry, but my artillery got taken out fairly early on, i was fighting in the streets of hannover, so i just kept firing with my line infantry while doing hit and runs with my general and letting the armed citizenry die. Eventually i was down to just 80 line infantry out of the 800 i started with and my general, but the prussians only had their 3 artillery units and their general. The result was a stalemate, as i couldnt send my general out from the building cover to deal with the cannon, as he would be destroyed a combined cannon and enemy general attack, and i couldnt send my line infantry, because they would have to form square to stop the enemy general, but that would have meant getting the bjesus blasted out of them by the cannon. Its a good thing a left the timer on otherwise the ai and myself would have been sittin staring at each other for a long time, i got a phyriic victory for that battle.
