Formation Question
Hi, all.
I just was curious about the type of formations typically you guys use. I understand many situations can change formation, but I was wondering what your 20 stack V. 20 stack on flat ground formation was. Figured I'd show mine as well. And had a question about what you guys think.

star= general
green= calvry/dragoons
blue= MARINES/line infantry
red= grenadiers
yellow= lights/skirmishers
orange= artillery/puckle gun
I generally have them work in what i'll call "regiments", which are simply seperate groups of units. That form a giant line with small gaps in between. the lights will counter calvry with stakes and/or skirmish. My line infantry works obviously as the backbone in holding the line. The grenadiers are there to use their genades, manuever around the enemy, and/or plug gaps in the line. Their the reinforment of each regiment. my calvry/dragoons are used typically to counter similiar units and rout enemies, sometimes plugging the gaps and save the artillery. Now, I use to have the whole army consist of one grenadier unit to work with. Then, the lights would simply fall back and be used to reinforce later if the line began to fall. Now, the problem with that is then you only have one grenadier unit which is one of the more powerful units on the field. On top of that, even worse, the lights don't always do so well in plugging the gaps. Thus I switched to the system above.
The only question I really have is about my least powerful flank. As you can see the left has only lights and line infantry. Now should I stick with my weak side only have lights there, whom fall back to later reinforce, or simply have no lioghts there and have a reinforcing unit of grenadiers, like in the next attachment:

I don't plan on changing the amount of calvary or cannons, so scratch that idea. I listed some advantages/disadvantages of each.
Having the lights ADV:
-can place stakes and act in light infantry formation
-can use expert range to take out key units(grenadiers, elites, elite skirmishers, calvry, etc.)
-can simply retreat behind line to take up ground and fire and later reinforce
-weak side of line needs least power, which means cheaper unit
DIS:
-can get caught up in melee with enemy untis when retreating behind line
-melee can not being proficent enough to plug gaps
-calvary can massacre them
-less morale
-If in deep trouble, calv/dragoons can reinforce line; however, this means one less calv/dragoon unit I have to use on other operations
Having the grenadiers ADV:
-strong melee to counter line breaks
-can manuever a little easier with less risk of being routed
-already in back, reducing chance of being caught up with enemy units or fired on from behind
-can throw grenades to counter mass attacks
DIS:
-range won't help line infantry counter far off, elite units(which also means the line can become more exposed to heavy attack from grenades)
-unable to skirmish
-more expensive
So the questions:
-Should just the lights or just the grenadiers be on the weak flank?
-How is my "regiments" tactic overall?
-What formation do you guys use?
Thanks!
