    Hello everyone.

Having been intrigued for the past several years with seeing clips of Total War games, i finally decided to buy one, it being N:TW.

And I must say, this game is brutal for me. Even on easy.
I played the tutorial, but it feels a bit overwhelming with so much crap to keep track of, but to jump from that to this big race of a mission in the Italy campaign seems a bit much. I realize I'm just inexperienced at this type of game, but there seems to be a very steep learning curve here. I'm curious, is every mission this huge race to the finish, or is it pretty generous? Should I just ignore the campaign altogether and just do the skirmish games instead, or are they no easier?

Well, Italy and Egypt campaigns have quite strict time limit, so I'd recommend you to just take them easily and not care about running out of time - the campaigns are playable even after the end date I think. I wouldn't recommend you to ignore the campaign - it's great fun when you get used to it, and at least for me skirmishes alone would get boring, though that doesn't mean that's the case for you.

    Don’t be discouraged!

There is a learning curve, especially for first time players. But in no time at all it will come to you.

I did a little guide for Italy that might give you a pointer or two.

If you are interested, that is.

I hope it helps, and don’t be afraid to start over, though saves before battles help.

I hope you have fun with the game.

You should really try out to do simple land battles first. Once you get the way how to use your army, try out the campaign. There is an option where you can activate advisors. They can help you out too. Experimenting is the key to succes!

It just seems to be punishing for new players, like me. There's a lot to take in from the tutorial, and the first mission in the campaign is to run across the whole map in 20 something turns.

I would think there could be a few other missions to ease me into the game before throwing something like that at me.

Hi there, and welcome to the forums!

I've usually ignored time limit on campaigns. Actually, playing the Italy campaign I was suddenly surprised when I got a message telling me I had to complete in 10 turns OR ELSE! Got a bit stressed out, rushed to meet my objectives, failed to meet my objectives, got angry and quit the campaign.

Since then I think it occurred to me that you can probably just keep playing after you miss the deadline. That's been possible for the grand campaign in all games until now anyway.

It may seem a bit daunting, but try out the Grand Campaign (Nappys Europe campaign or a Coalition campaign) where the time limit is further away. Just take your own time, and if you dare, just ignore the time limit altogether (I know that's what I usually do).

TW games are what you yourself make of them. People play in different styles. Some people like to blitz across the map, conquering a province each turn. Other people (like myself) just chill out and have a good time. Deliberately taking their turns and not rushing anything.

You know, it's not the end goal, it's the getting there that's fun anyway.

Well I'm not going to give up that easily, but it is frustrating. :3

I thought I would just do the Napoleon campaign first, before playing the others, since this is technically considered the game.
And to be honest, a lot of the fights initiated i would just auto-complete. I think I need to figure out which unit is best against what, which is difficult when there appears to be 5 different types of riflemen.

Each type of troops has strengths and weaknesses.

National Guard and Militia are best for quelling unrest in cities and it is usually best not to use them in a fight if you can help it.

Then you need to balance your forces so you have some of everything else.

A General, Two Horse, Two or Three Cannon, One or two Light Infantry, and most of the rest Line Infantry or Fusiliers should give you what you need to win battles.

Once you can handle the Italian Campaign you can go onto the bigger ones. Just don’t rush. The Europe Campaign or the Campaigns of Coalition will be much more complex so get the bugs worked out in Italy first.
