After successfully downloading and installing faction unlock mod, decide dto try my favourite German state Bavaria.

Omg it is soooooo tough. You start with nothing. At war with Austria and then Russia as well as a few other minor states (and you wonder what the hell you did ). Also trouble with GB too but they can't get at you and you have no navy, being landlocked. No college or Gentleman for technology either. No spy (although you do spawn one later).

Oh yeah and the Austrians are right on your doorstep outside Munich. Followed by the Russians. Two fights to win.....

Anyone else tried Bavarians yet ?

That sounded like a rather challenging campaign start, yes

Those small states are useless to play imo. Like you said: No gentlemen or college, practically every nation is your enemy and the economy sucks.

    Bavaria is awsome!

i wish you would get some lines when you liberate them and that their helmets are more historical (they even have similar helmets as the real ones in game)

You've given a lot of good reasons why they're not a playable faction by default.

Oh I'm not actually complaining, I'm up for a challenge ! Somebody in this thread said how good the uniforms were which is also a plus.

Gonna have another session tonight after putting up Mrs PW's curtains () and just see how far I can get. The region just below me (forget the name) has been trashed by the French and could be a useful gain....I've got this idea to push for a coastal region and maybe get some trade going to boost the rather meagre income.

It'll probably end in disaster but hellava lot of fun trying.

Sweden was playable in ETW. I wonder how much of their playability they retained? They have the exact same starting...prospects as in ETW except losing Ingria and maybe some other territory to Russia. They also have a school. Two if you blitz Denmark.

People don't forget that for a faction to be playable doesn't mean necessarily to be able to win.
Sometimes a player can find a good challenge to play as a small faction just to see if he can conquer a couple of regions or if he can resist a certain number of turns. Think about Europa Universalis and Paradox games in general that are never balanced (on purpose).
There are many ways to enjoy a game and many challenges that one could enjoy, it is not all about winning!

There's a certain amount of balance implied to be required when considering playability. If you start out with no research capability, a rather small amount of territory, and two armies on your doorstep(and at least one other that'd be ready to fight you if he could get to you), playability is...not so.

Any fool can win a campaign with Prussia or France. It takes skill in both campaign play and battle play to succeed with a minor faction like Bavaria or Poland.
If you want to research tech, then go conquer a region with a school. If you have two armies bearing down on you, make peace or stand your ground.

Stroking your own ego aside, "MAKE IT HARD" died as a game design principle in the Super Nintendo era. Thumping your chest in misunderstanding of a game's design in a vainglorious effort to make others look incompetent is, shall we say, not the brightest move to make.

QFT; It's really fun to write up "unofficial" campaign rules before the campaign, and don't care about the victory conditions. Like, playing a minor faction ( italian states in etw ) and proclaiming unification of Italy as the major goal or something like that. I'm gonna start a Bavarian campaign soon, trying to make my claim with nappy on one side and the prussians and austrians on the other. Small state rising up against the larger ones ftw

Unfortunately, the Swedish unit roster is the smallest in the game! (N:TW)

That's the best challenge - not to conquer Europe with Napoleonic France or Prussia, but to conquer Europe as Albania or Monaco. Bavaria will do, I guess.

Heck, I suppose Bavaria in NTW is easier than Ethiopia in Hearts of Iron, and I tried that

It's so awesome to humiliate superpowers and fly the flag of some itsy bitsy country like Luxembourg over the capitals of France, Prussia and Russia. Really gives you that feeling of accomplishment.

started a campaign with Bavaria last night. Lots of fun. Under constant attack from Austria and Saxony. Poland is a blast too.

Only problem I had with Bavaria is that France seemed to not be very helpful.

for sure. most of my campaigns in Empire were with smaller factions and its looking to be the same with NTW!

in my Polish game I am just trying to survive. My long term goal is to get back Lithuania from Russia in hopes of uniting the Commonwealth again!
