Giving generals stats

I read up about this on the gamespot review and even though i have the game, i have no idea what affects generals gaining or losing traits. Any insight?

Winning or losing battles is the big one. Also, if a general sits in one place for too long I would imagine they would develop some undesirable traits, like in previous TW games.
