    Default Spread Out fights

Hey everyone! Ok so I was playing stainless steel and I noticed that the horses spread out when they fight and I LOVE IT! It looks so much more real and its way more realistic to me, nwo my question is... is there a way to make the foot soldiers spread out like that, because that would make my day

    Loose formation?
Jon had taken Donal and Benjen’s advice to heart: Sam may be fat and pathetic, but he is still a member of the watch, and one of the few black brothers who isn't a rapist or thief. (out of context, this sounds ridiculously racist)

You'll have to edit the EDU, I believe. In there, you can edit the spacing between each person in the unit.

I only want the spacing to happen while they are fighting, like when the horses fight they space out and like.. go all over the place when they fight

Infantry already do that in SS. Just not as often as the horses because they don't break formation during a charge. However it is really annoying because you can get 1 single soldier caught in the side of a melee and his entire formation becomes exhausted even though only 1 of them is fighting. I've had many sieges where my losses were much higher than they should be due to not being able to have any reserve units despite trying because 1 or 2 soldiers from every unit somehow got caught in the fighting and tired out the whole unit.

Even when not in sieges you can see this effect sometimes when you charge the flank of enemy unit with infantry and the charge hits two units, sometimes 1 enemy unit will try to reface the your charging unit while the other enemy unit moves away. Often the charging infantry unit then gets separated very far apart with bulk of unit in 2 groups and a bunch of loose wandering solider in between.

I try to minimize this be making sure the facing is correct and the formation is not loose before a charge. Extra micro but usually worth it.

For the cavalry I can't tell you how many times after a charge and retreating to charge again 2-3 cavalry gets separated and then the whole unit is extra slow to move because the engine trying to make them reform and then the general gets killed...

Ah, I know what you mean.

The term us profesionals use is "cluster"

Yeah my infanty always spreads out a whole lot fighting in sieges, where I'll have a group of 5 units fighting, and if I randomly drag and make a small box, at the least I'll select 3 units even though it's like 50 men.

Believe me, everything that has been done to maintain infantry cohesion in SS has been done already, via EDU, BAI and animations. The engine has limits.

Ok I can see you guys dont understand me I did a horrible job at ttrying to explain it, you guys kinda get what I mean i mean ok.. When you see a battlefield there isnt just one Straight line of soldiers fighting another straightline of soldiers, They are usually intertwined and scattered inbetween eachother... lik uh Medieval total war regularly does this kind of fighting(which makes sense to keep formation and such which they did, but I like more... less formal battling.. the real suff)

    Med Total war version:
    VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

now what I want is something liek this

    VVV<<>><<
    ^^^>><<
    VV^^VVV>>><<<

Just with soldiers all over the place fighting eachother, and where there isnt almost 3/4ths of the whole batallion just sitting ther waiting for the guy infront of him to die and then move up, that usually doesnt happen in battle, usually each soldier will find someone to fight, not sit back and wait... unless of course its siege warfare then you cant really help it.... but yea as I was saying I meant where pretty much the soldiers all faught eachother and intertwined thir spauds togetehr instead of half the soldiers just sitting there in the back waiting for the front ones to be killed to move up, Which this did happen in real life BUT Its... a very formal way of fighting to keep form and usually only well trained batallions did that, because int he heat of battle its kind of hard to hold formation you know :\

AND ACTUALLY Ive seen this sometimes on medieval total war when I was fighting in the town sqaure sometimes and at some rare times on the battlefieldIll try to get a picture of it to show you what Im talking about in the game

Its choppy but liek these guys I moved them into the middle, jsut imagine that all around and a little spread out

And this is what it normally looksl iek (which is al ittle boring to me)

BY THE WAY it sounds liek you guys think i DONT want my forces to spread out and break formations and vise versa for the enemy but thats excactly what I want and to be exagerated int he game too

A not very effective way of doing would be to command your troop to run to the area behind the enemy. Once your troops are in the middle of the enemies formation, command them to attack. You'll get your desired effect, but your troops will probably drop dead like flies.

Excactly which is why I want to incorperate whatever they did to the horses to make them extremely loose to the soldiers
