Perhaps it is a reflection of playing the old TalonSoft Waterloo, but to me, the stats of French units seem way too high, particularly morale. French militia has higher morale than my "elite" Prussian units in my current game. I noted that the base stats are not that high in a custom battle. Some of this is due to the effects of the general (viz. NB), but even the base stats w/o a general are higher than listed in the custom battle. Do the French receive some overall morale bonus?

Well I'm playing GB on h/h and I find the French too weak. Austria is giving them hell and France hasn't captured Vienna by 1808.They can't stand against my line infantry and run round like headless chickens.

I think it largely depends on what front you're fighting on, which influences which general you're going to get, thus the differences in morale. I'm walking over northern and southern France while Napoleon is having a nice campaign pushing East.

Some of it is the ability of the general to impact morale. However, even French units in recruitment show higher morale ratings than in custom battle mode.

It's a balance mechanic used to reflect the more cohesive nature of the French forces of the time. The Prussian military was sort of in shambles by this point as were mot militaries. The French were better led and better motivated on the whole.

    This.

Napoleon's army was, at the time, far superior to anything else around.

Far superior to any other armies perhaps, he was still no match for mother nature.

Any reason the morale of Russian troops is so low? They don't like being Russians? Some Russian infantry is like the firelock armed citizens of other nations.

Which is weird because if one country's soldiers had morale to rival the French, it would be the Russians. Especially when they were defending the Motherland. At Borodino, Russian soldiers stood their ground for hours as they were being bombarded by artillery.

The Prussian troops should not get morale bonuses when defending the fatherland then?

All troops should get morale bonuses when defending their country. Not just those "RUSSIANS R PATRIOTS KEK"-talk that's been going around since ETW

Nor the "PRUSSIANS R SPARTANS IN BLUE COATS" talk.

Or the British, for that matter. I think British Line Infantry are the best in everything - if memory serves, they have better melee, defense, accuracy and reloading skills (The latter two are reasonable) than anyone else.

There was a big difference between early and late (post reforms) Prussians and Austrians. The early type basically just cannon fodder trying to fight in the old 18th cen, way.The later Austrians in 1809 were much improved and the Prussians in 1813. And the Russians were more afraid of a beating with the knout than of the French. In Russia at least they were known for holding their ground as at Borodino

'most interesting part of the book is on the Russian tactics. Mr. Spring ably describes organization of infantry units, their formations in battle, skirmishing and firing. Diagrams are inserted throughout the narrative to facilitate reader’s understanding. The author describes Russian soldiers as "stubborn in defence and aggressive in attack" but also emphasizes their negative aspects, including excessive alcohol consumption and lack of initiative.'
