Replayability?

    Default Replayability?

Hi, I have not bought the game yet because I'm worried about how replayable it will be. Due to the lack of accessibility to modders I don't expect it to be as replayable as M2TW, which I play to this day with mods, but I would hope it's more than a 1-2 time play through. So to those who have the game, does it strike you as having much replay value? Is most of the single player scripted? I don't play TW games for the multiplayer, so I'm just looking for opinions on the single player campaign(s). As I understand it, the single player isn't nearly as sandbox as previous Grand Campaigns, so what is there in the single player to keep someone coming back?

Well...you can play the coalition campaigns....all 4 of em =P (world conquest type campaign)
So you can atleast play NTW 5 times...

There's also whether you want to stick with the same strategy every time.
One thing is for certain: the more profoundly baffled you have been in your life, the more open your mind becomes to new ideas.

And then you can download Bucefalo's ESF files, and play as whatever faction you want.

I'm currently in the middle of a Kingdom of Italy game, and I have to say, it's something else.

You have crap for ministers, crap for generals, and a fairly limited selection of units.

I've managed to unify Italy (with the exception of that one territory that's held by France) & take Sardinia, but every time I try to expand into Austria my general manages to get himself killed in battle.

there should be good mods out soon. one of them (planned at the moment) is order of war...

my eternal thanks to the EB team for making R:TW such an epic game, and to TWC and all other modders for pushing the boundaries with each Total War title .

My biggest question here is, in a mod that allows you to play as other factions, if the campaign is in fact scripted, isn't it mostly just you going to your enemies to attack? Without the actual AI free-for-all/sandbox element of previous TW games, isn't it incredibly boring to play as any unlocked factions? In case you couldn't tell, I don't own the game, but the scripted campaign is a big negative for me right now and I want to learn more about it. You can't have a linear strategy game.

All i can say is that the GC is scripted a bit too, but if your smart enough to notice it you shouldn't be replaying the GC against the AI too often and should move to multiplayer. So yeah, it could become a bit repetitive for the smart gamer who notices it, but most people won't notice it unless they pay a lot of attention to it, so therefore most NTW gamers should not find it repetitive.
"we're way way pre-alpha and what that means is there is loads of features not just in terms of the graphics but also in terms of the combat and animations that actually aren't in the game yet.So the final game is actually gonna look way way better than this!” - James Russell, CA
Just like the elephant animation, this Carthage scenario is actually in the game, it just has a small percantage factor for showing up, that's all...

Ah, so the CAI can still act mostly on its own behalf, but with a few scripted moves thrown in, the same way a few naval invasions may be scripted in mods with a lot of water. That's much more reassuring than Darth's review. Thanks.

Yeah, not sure what you mean by scripted.

France's Europe campaign does in fact have "missions", but hell, ignore them if you want.

The Coalition Campaigns do not even really have missions. Or at least, not very good ones. I just ignore them.

And when I play Italy, it is not unlike E:TW. Yes, I am at war with Austria/Russia/GB from the beginning of the game, so there is that limitation. But it isn't so bad.

There is no questions in my mind that re playability will be an issue. There is a limited amount of scenarios and the game is still very close to ETW which we all play extensively - I expect that I will start getting bored with it within a few weeks.

Keep in mind the MP aspect of it though.

Find a buddy and start a MP campaign. It changes the nature of the game immensely when you're both fighting each other's battles.

It's a hell of a lot more difficult to advance, for one thing. More often than not, even when you beat your opponent you took a pounding, so then strategically you're forced to stop advancing so you can regroup.

Darth should get his head checked for comparing an un-modded game to a game that's been modded for most of a year.

Wait until this time next year, and then write a review comparing the NTW mods to ETW mods.

At least that would make some small amount of sense.

With the multiplayer campaign and drop in battles, this is easily the most replayable vanilla game CA has released

The coalition campaigns are actaully just the GC but you can play as Prussia, Russia, Austria, or Great Britain.

You are thinking about the Napoleon campaigns which are Italy, Egypt, than a campaign in Europe as Napoleon starting in 1805.
