    Default Alexander worth it?

Is the Alexander Expansion pack worth it? I always wanted to play through that campaign, but I never got around to it. Now I see that you can get the Complete RTW package on steam for $10. I already have RTW gold.. but considering $10 is the best price I can get for Alexander anywhere else.. why not? lol

    What are your thoughts?

Don't waste your money. Alexander is possibly the worst expansion to any game.

Nah, I already have M2TW, Kingdoms, RTW, BI, ETW (and all DLC) and NTW: LI. I'd get STW and MTW if they'd work on my computer.. which they wouldn't -_-

If I'm gonna save money, I'll save it for NTW dlc.

Dunno if this is the correct place to say this, but you can have the Alexander experience with any Hellenistic faction in EB 1.2 and that costs no money.

Oh, I welcome the discussion of mods in this thread, especially if they impact the decision in any way

Explain how EB has an Alexander experience. Is it the ability to play as Macedon? Because I can do that in Vanilla by just editing desc_strat.txt in about 2 seconds.

    I liked Alexander

check out This mod for Alexander

    also about EB
from playing it I can say that each faction has its own unique feel
This game seems to be what you want
its a mod for the mod EB

also rise of Persia is a good game to get that Alexander feeling

If you do get Alexander and do not like it
you could always download megas alexandros

I am currently playing the Alexander campaign, and I think due to the improved CAI and partly BAI and the fact that you start off as a small faction against an empire, it is fun and worthwhile. I have to say though, that CA has not put the greatest effort into Alex - there are no new videos or extra historical info, which I expected from a rather limited expansion, in which you can play only as one faction and the cause of action is pretty much preset.

The historical battles are well-done though.

Altogether, I haven't regretted playing it and an extra benefit is that you can use the Alex.exe file for vanilla and BI and get the improved AI. Some mods are also playable only with Alex.

You see, it's a mixed picture.

You may not find it worth it for the vanilla campaign, but mods like Aristeia, AtB, MA, and Warlords of Sparta definitely make it worth it.

ooh yes the LOTR TW alexander mod alone justifies buying Alexander. looks better than the actual game, more factions, and they even have a forum dedicated to that mod alone.

I feel that the Alexander expansion is ignored by many because of its poor content but CA incorporated improvements to the game engine which provide a definite improvement in playing experience when you use it with mods such as EB http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=134572

I use the Alex.exe for a modified Paeninsula Italica Mod, this allows the addition of a lot more units into the game and makes the AI a real challenge. Yesterday I fought a battle as the Italianate League, my phalanx units, archers and javelinmen held off a fierce assault by two armies. I noticed that the computer seemed to have mistakenly kept two units of heavy spear men behind a hill and a general's cavalry unit at the top of a hill in a different part of the map. I waited and waited and neither charged and as I didn't want a draw, I marched my army to attack the general and overcome his cavalry. Just when I was at the point of defeating him the two enemy spear men units emerged from nowhere to attack the rear and a real struggle ensued. This had been a AI tactic to reserve units that had almost worked and have never come across this in either RTW or Barbarian Invasion.

I would NOT have bought the Alexander expansion to play the Vanilla version, so it shows how mods complement the game and not compete against it.

I understand what you are arguing here. Tis indeed an old argument that mods keep many players in a brain-lock by causing them to think SP is the only thing that is playable in the TW genre. While the complete dedication of TWC to mods is enough proof to sustain this argument from a judicidal point of view, all those youtube commentary makers provide clans with so many new recruits and toys that they dont really care if some people think the MP servers closed years ago(which is not the case.) or some other crazy things like unbalance(the weaklings excuse for losing)

Therefore i beg to differ with you. Mods Complement SP. they compete against MP. I wasted two years of my free time on RTW's SP before i realized that MP was so much better.

I am not stating that you are all mindless drones ofcourse, most of you play mods and not the boring that is vanilla SP. someone should help the people that still play vanilla SP. MP and mods have so much more to offer.

Vanilla Alex is pretty bad but as others have mentioned the mods make it more than worth getting.

The AI in Alex is a lot better than RTW and BI, and the vanilla campaign can be pretty fun at first. CA should have put a lot more work into it though, and there are gaping historical accuracy errors (and parts of the map are atrocious). However, it's still a really fun game and there are tons of mods to make up for some of vanilla's defects. I say buy it; it's probably not at all expensive either.

OK, I'll probably get it, tho maybe I'll wait until the next TW sale.. I've gotten enough TW to keep me occupied for years

For me Alexander was a one-and-done. Tried to play a second time, lasted only two or three turns. Reading through this I may get the LOTR mod and try it.

Try playing as some of the other factions. The Dahae, for example, are very fun to play as.

    Hi there.
I like Alexander. In Rome I play very much as macedon and Seludica, so the phalanx-style warfare is very entertaining. And on VH/VH it keeps its playability for quite a while.
