Default Diplomacy: Is there a way to find out what the other side wants?

Sorry, for this newbie question but after 20 minutes of research I couldn't find an answer. Almost all other games let you say, "I want this" what do you want for it (if anything?). Is that the case here or do I have to keep guessing? and if the latter, is there a mod that does this? Many thanks!!

It's a matter of guessing, more or less. However, there are ways to bolster your chances of the other faction agreeing to your terms:

    1. Offer research, money, or a region.
    2. Increase their attitude to you through trading or tributary gifts now and then

I'm going to guess that the other faction will most likely demand a territory from you, particularly a territory required for its victory conditions (I'm unsure if that is a factor), but they usually end up asking for a random territory that's far off and probably impossible for them to hold.

Basically, make them an offer they can't refuse and you might pull through. That being said, don't rely the CAI to negotiate the best terms all the time.

It's pretty much a guessing game, you offer something you think the other side will like only to have him be insulted by your offer. I just don't bother since it rarely works.

Yeah, it's a step back from Med2 where you would at least get some indication of how your offer was considered: Balanced, Generous, etc.

I have no idea why they took this feature out.

Maybe because we can offer unlimited times in one turn in ETW, and they thought implementing the hint would make it overpowered?

At least, that's the sort of weird arse reasoning I'd expect from ETW's design team lol.

The diplomacy options are still a huge step forward from Med2 and rome.

Pay close attention to what the other guy says. If he says " that's insulting ! " you are way off base, or, this faction hates you at this point so much you could offer them the sun and the moon and they wouldn't take it.
If he says, " I'm sorry but I must inform you that we must decline your offer as unsuitable " Bingo ! You are in the ball park. He is basically saying he regrets not taking your offer as is. Offer more.
Often in this case one more tech, or another 2000 gold, will clinch the deal.
What the other guy says is only a broad hint, but it is a hint.

You didn't ask this but ; I acquire about half my techs not from research but from purchases from friendly or nuetral factions. Military techs are the most expensive / hard to acquire .
