Default GPU prices will rise 5-10%

Little blurb on GPU prices. Some loose wording, but it would suggest this is a market trend and not limited to the manufacturers listed...

DigiTimes reports graphics card makers including Asus, MSI Gigabyte, and Tul are planning to increase graphics card prices by 5-10 percent to maintain gross margins.

Although TSMC recently said the defect density of its 40nm technology has already dropped from 0.3-0.4 per square inch to 0.1-0.3, the sources pointed out that the improvement in overall yield still needs more time before catching up with market demand.

To maintain gross margins from the increased cost created by the GPU shortages and rising DRAM quotes, graphics card makers including Asustek Computer, Micro-Star International (MSI), Gigabyte Technology and Tul are planning to increase prices of their products by 5-10%, according to market sources.
So it is a pretty solid bet that ATI cards will not come down in price in response to the 4xx series.

Great... I was hoping to buy a new one soon. But yeah, I've heard of this and I suppose most PC parts prices will be rising in the future

Naw, there will be some loyal PC gamers.... Surely!!

Makes me very glad I bought my PC last May when prices were at their lowest, everything except CPU's have been on the rise ever since.

EVGA GTX260 $230 from Amazon, Last May I got mine for $170 each, which means it costs $120 more for the same two cards now. Newegg hasn't had any in stock for a coupe months so their price of $215 doesn't count.

This was kind of expected if you look at memory prices as of late, video cards have a lot of ram on them these days prices of DRAM was bound to have an effect on bottom line which would be passed on to consumers in the form of a price increase. As for 40nm this whole process has been flawed since day 1 it's no wonder why AMD wants to move to GF and 28nm as soon as it's ready. TSMC seem unable to fix the 40nm process and the best they can do is patch it up, all in all this is bad news for anyone who is looking to build a new PC in the month or so which is annoying for since I want to build a HTPC and I don't fancy paying £150 for a Radeon HD5770 when I paid £125 not two months ago.

And the new ATI cards had already increased in price shortly after they were released... darn.

Yawn. The same statement has been going around for 15 years now and yet the PC is as strong as its always been, unless they find a way of replicating the precision and easy of use of the mouse on the consoles (or until mice become mainstream with console which they won't) you will never get a decent RTS title on them. The PC has lots of advantages over a console which consoles can't use which means their will always be a market for PC games.

I agree but the console will improve in graphics this is where all the money will come in the new generation of consoles will be just as good as a PC and maybe they will use a mouse and keyboard ? maybe their will be support who is to know but im telling you this right now friend im not paying 800+ quid for a PC when theirs a console that can play games just as smooth eye candy or not the console is the future which im really narked at it pisses me off so much love PC gaming to.

Since when does a console not need a GPU anyway ? For all we know consoles could be effected just the same. They might be subsidized by the console overlords to be cheaper, but that cost gets passed down in the form of games being more expensive.

If fermi's price doesn't challenge the 5000 series of cards then I doubt we will see a price drop this year at all. The 5000 series is 15% above retail already and right after they were just launched.

I worded that wrong, within a couple weeks of launch they had already exceeded their retail price by about 15% and that's where it is now.
