Thread: Performance & FPS gain (MUST READ FOR ATI USERS)

  1. #1

Default Performance & FPS gain (MUST READ FOR ATI USERS)

I have gathered a short list of things which helped me gain a solid 30-45 FPS boost on the battlemap and campaign map, i hope that some of you will have as much use of this, as i had.

    Best of luck, Cain

    1. Disable CrossFire, if you cannot find CrossFire in your Catalyst Control Center then it's because you ither do not have two cards in your computer, or, you like me own a card with two GPU's in it. If that is the case you need to disable Catalyst AI, i have tested with both "Disabled, Normal and Advanced" where the clear winner was Disabled, the reason being NPW is not yet optimized for CrossFire.

    2. Checked to see if i had two sound drivers installed (which in my case, i had)
If you go into Device Management and then under Sound Devices, you should see one driver installed, if you like me have fx. Realtek and a ATI driver installed, then right click on the ATI Driver and disable it, the issue was mentioned on the AMD-ATI forums and the issue drains a lot of FPS because then sound plays in two layers, where one of them is silenced. This fix gave me a stable 20-30 FPS boost and the game is a lot more enjoyable.

    3. The driver setup is important, i for one though have not been affected by any driver related issues on the graphics card, i have tried suggested versions such as 9.6 and 8.5 with neither of them giving me any increase to preformance, but some cards may be affected and i recommend that you try these drivers, i have heard several people saying this fixed their lag/shuttering issues. Personally i run on 10.2 drivers.

Hope the small guide can be of help to some ATI users with similar issues as i had, thanks to the Tech Moderators for their paticence to give me advice, i payed off big time!

good advice, except I get more fps with my crossfire system enabled, about 80% scaling.

I assume you have a 4870x2, if so try installing 9.6 again and enable crossfire AND rename the napoleon.exe to empire.exe and run the game directly from empire.exe. you should see 80-100% scaling, if not you may be CPU limited.

I'll give that a shot, thanks for the advise!

And you are most correct, the infamous 4870x2

Thanks for the sound driver tip. I checked and sure enough there were two drivers, after disabling the ATI driver I've gained some FPS in the game.

Good to hear, note that it's not only for ETW and NTW this improves framerates, also in other games

Where can I find "Device Management"?

If you have Windows Vista, or 7 you can just open up the start menu and search for "Device Management" and it should appear within seconds, if you have windows XP or your search gives no results, right click on "My Computer" and then go into properties.

Then in the left-side bar there should be a tab named "Device Mangement" click on that and it should open up.

If you have Windows XP: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/window...essdmcpnxp.htm

    Hope it helps

Thanks. However, it didn't really help, as far as I could tell. I had two sound cards on the list, Realtek and Creative. I disabled Realtek, but when I tried a Custom Battle shortly after, the game continued to stutter when cannons would fire.

Are you using X-FI? If so, are you using Alchemy with it?

The shuttering when guns fire is not performance related, several users have had the issue and it's either a bug within the game, which happens when using a certain graphic card/processor, or it's a error within the graphics card, which hopefully the manefacture will fix ASAP.

Hope you find a fix for your problem

They say the shuttering when cannons go off is not a bug. One player said there was no drop in fps when it happened.

Thanks. One thing, though - what do you mean by this?

They say the shuttering when cannons go off is not a bug.
Not a bug? Well, if it's not a bug, then what is it? A feature?

It's probably just a communication error between the two of us, but I'm not quite sure what you mean.

That is the way it was put in the other forums by those that know more than I do on the subject.

There have been problems with cannons and framerates dropping in some parts due mainly to sound driver conflicts.

When it comes to cannons firing and the ground/camera shakes, ti is said to be a feature. One of them that questioned it said he put fraps on it and there was no loss in framerate and agreed it was a feature.

Obviously it's not ment to cause major FPS drops on systems, otherwise they wouldn't add it to the game, there must be some script/technical issue that's messing with certain card's stability when shaking the camera/doing the canonball animation

Aaah. I see where I misunderstood you. Obviously, the ground shaking isn't a bug, but a feature. Lots of games do this for cinematic effect.

I thought you meant that the FPS "stuttering" was said to be intentional. That, I found hard to belive.
