Artillery gains experiance fast definity in canister fire moments. But remember Artillery batteries were normally commanded and operated by more educated men, it took talent to fire a cannon ball with reasonable accuracy over 500+ yards. During the American Civil War Artillery battery crews normally had much fancier uniforms, were more expensive to outfit, and train. So ya they have to kill more people to gain experiance, it's more complicated than just aiming a musket and firing. Artillery guns were the first gunpowder based weapons to get front/rear gun sights and range ajusting sights. Even by the American Civil War most firearms only had a single forward sight on the gun, some marksmen specific firearms during that war became some of the first firearms in the world to get rear and forward gunsights and the Sharps rifles used by Union Sharp Shooters were one of the first firearms to get range adjusting rear sights as well.
