RTR crashes when going into gameplay.

haia, i can run RTR finally because i had lots of problems with it.

it starts now, the movie plays, the menu shows, but when i try to start a campaign or a custom battle, the game crashes.

does anyone know what is going on?

i haven't got a great expertise in the field of modding, so help would be appreciatted^^
i use a HP dv11 notebook, with windows vista.

Have you removed the map.rvm?

Are you sure you are using the rigth BI patch?

Have you installed it in the rigth place?

i have BI, but from a gold edition. this is the case:
i have this RTW gold edition, but found out that RTR would not run at all with it.
so i borrowed this normal RTW, without BI, to run RTR. and regarding that the mod runs now, i installed it in the right folder.
but i never heard to delete a file. where can i find this .rvm file?

What version of RTR are you using? TIC and FOE needs barbarian invasion (BI) that is included in the gold edition The only version that isn't using BI is RTR gold, and that one is very outdated...

RTR runs fine with the RTW gold edition as RTW gold edition has BI.

Are you using the steam protected gold edition? There is a post on these forums on how to switch Steam to launch BI with mods. Or you can get a DRM free BI exe to launch mods and BI (bypasses steam).

I used to play a version of R:TR years ago, but I'm having a lot of issues with the current version.

I've tried following

The Preferred RTW-Only Method for installing RTR Platinum v1.9:
Install Rome Total War.
Install the RTW v1.3 Patch.
Install the RTW v1.5 Patch.
Download and install the RTR Platinum Full Install. The "rtr_platinum_v1.9_full_install.zip" file is approximately 220MB in size.

but the game would crash to desktop after the loading screen. (the one with the title overlaid over the map)

I uninstalled and tried this instead:

and I can at least get into the game's menus, but any attempt to start a campaign, custom or historic battle crashes to desktop.

Do the crashes create logs, or is there some other way to find out what the issue may be?

There's no map.rvm file, I've never loaded vanilla R:TW on this system, and the discs are the original CDs from when R:TW and R:BI were first released.

The map.rwm file comes with the game so it should be there. You`re probably not looking where you should.

Ah, map.rwm, not map.rvm...

Well, deleted the map.rwm file and now instead of crashing immediately after clicking the arrow to begin the campaign it crashes after the loading bar fills. The new map.rwm file is being generated and I've tried different sound and graphics options, but none seem to make a difference.

What operating system are you running?

RTR PE should create a folder in your RTW folder called RTRPE,
Can you also post the target from the shortcut you are using and the full pathname to the RTW folder

XP, and the shortcut which I'm using is:

"C:\Games\Rome - Total War\RomeTW-BI.exe" -show_err -nm -mod:

I installed it to C:\Games\Rome - Total War rather than the default location, might that be an issue? When the CTDs occur there's no message returned.

There's no folder called RTRPE, but there is:

Data\RTR
Docs\RTR Gold Read Me
Docs\RTR Platinum Read me

And inside Data\UI\UNITS there are a lot of #RTR_AOR_... files inside the various folders, so it would appear to be at least partially installed. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it a few times and haven't had any obvious error during the process.

When at the menu I can hear the clicks from moving through the pages and the music so I'm hoping it not a sound issue, and it's a modern computer, so it should be well in excess of whatever specs are required.

You cannot install both RTR Platinum and RTR Gold. Only install one of the two on a clean install of RTW (ie remove RTW and install it again from scratch). I would advice to use the RTR Platinum version. But to do so, you have to make sure you have RTW updated to 1.5 and RTW-BI to 1.6 (to see the version number: launch the game => options menu => top-right corner)

Well, I uninstalled again and deleted the RTW folder, reinstalled R:TW, reinstalled R:BI, patched to 1.6 and installed RTR 1.9 (Just as described on this page, and using the copy downloaded from the link also on this page: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=104767)

Both the RTR Gold Read Me and RTR Platinum Read me folders are back again, they must both be a part of the 1.9 installation.

When I load up the game and go into the options after installing RTR the version listed is 1.6.

The end result is the same though; when I start up either a campaign, custom battle or historical battle the loading bar fills and the game CTDs. Are there any log files, or any way to access what the error causing the CTD is? Is there a different version of 1.9 to try?

Sorry, but you need to do a clean install again of RTW & BI
including the relevant patches

Use the "modfoldered/mod switch version" for RTRPE from here http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...69585#RTRPE-MS

There are a few advantages to using modswitch versions.
1. you can still play RTW/BI if you want
2. If the install goes wrong, its easier to re-install the mod than everything, all over again
