They're militia you can recruit from the Africa provinces, if you are playing a European faction.

There are the slightly less effective African Line Infantry and a caste of female skirmishers that may be recruited in North Africa. The Line Infantry are European exclusive, but any faction to my knowledge can recruit the skirmishers. Good thing too, they're very decent infantry.

Not true. The Dahomey Amazons are still an exclusive unit that "only" the owners of the pre-order DLC can recruit.

Well the pre order DLC is available over Steam now are they not?

The Amazons I dislike a lot their accuracy isn't all that great and they have very little ammunition, normal light infantry I find superior still in a distance fire fight. Though they work wonders are early engagers, put them in front to engage line infantry until they get swamped by melee charge or run out of ammunition then send them in a charge, have line infantry then close into range and fire into friend/foe masses.

Wrong u can get all pre-order units along with those from the special forces edition as a dlc.

It would be great if this was the other way round, for instance if the maratha's conquered europe they could recruit natives, but armed with swords.

There are also some black-skinned units in the AUM (additional units mod), some of which are recruitable in the Caribbean, and others in Africa. I think they're available to all factions that own these regions, but not certain.

Because unfortunately all the black people in Jamaica/Haiti and other Caribbean islands were slaves.

Actually all European powers in the West Indies used black soldiers - free and not free. White soldiers died in droves due to disease. And slavery was a little more complicated than black=slave, there were plenty of freedmen and free blacks, some of who were slave owners themselves.

For example - the British took up to 2000 machete-armed Jamaican slaves on their ill-fated expedition to Cartagena in 1741 (which ultimately failed due to disease) as well as all-Black regiments (Jamaicans included) to New Orleans in 1815. The Spanish forces attacking the British in the Southwest during the American Revolution also had black regiments from Cuba.

The AUM mod lets you recruit 'African infantrymen' in the West Indies until you develop your tech tree - they look really cool.

Spain brought some into France in my current campaign. We're allies, but they helped destoy a revolution so I saw them in action. Pretty cool.
