Default Whats your Views On External Hard Drivers ?

Need some advice and personal views on these things.

I was thinking of buying a 500GB western Digital 2.0.

So you want to install your OS and all programs on an external HDD?
I haven't done it myself but it should work alright if you keep the external HDD connected all the time. It's NTFS so Windows should like it

I couldn't work without them there so handy to have and make very easy, quick, convenient and safe backup devices I trust them a lot more then I do optical media which is nothing but headache to backup and restore to.

I like them so much I have two, one 160Gb drive which is used for all my back .iso's, music and pictures and docs. I've had this drive now for going on 6 years and it still goes strong, I know if I had the same data backed up on the DVD's those discs will have gotten scratched, lost, damaged and worn out by now. My second drive is Western Digital My Book 500GB with esata which hold hundreds of encoded .avi's and .mkv's (.mkv FTW) movies and will play a crucial role in my HTPC project. This drive is nearly full now and I'm thinking of replacing it with a 1tb or 2tb drive.

If you have the right motherboard i.e a P55 with powered USB 2 ports you should be able to run this drive via the USB lead alone.
