Icon8 "Man of the Hour" more realistic?

I am getting tired of seeing after a tough battle where a peasant or captain is offered the award "Man of the Hour" ... this award will promote them to a family member general instantly.

Trying very hard to keep the royal blood pure and true, with only 1 or 2 names. As a gift I award a good general with this HONOR but never ever simple nobody who just won 1 battle ... no matter how hard it was.

For that reason I do not adopt any general that is offered and rarely use my princesses
    marriage to bring any in.

I would like to award those good captains that get "Man of the Hour" with something ...for they do deserve it ... like becoming a general but NOT part of my family.

Is there any area that I can adjust this or is there mods out that do ?

I always make them my family. A strong General should be in your family. It usually comes at random paces. Maybe you can kill your general off if he becomes your family?

The point was making ... is they ALWAYS become a Family member. I want to award them and allow them to become generals but not part of my family.

That is the info I am looking for. How to mods this?

I don't think any of the mods have this and I don't think it can be modded. You could ask in the mod forum.

I agree with you there, it's better (and more historically accurate) to have them as generals.

By the way, there should be more generals for the factions, in this time period, there were lots of nobles that weren't in the royal family!

I always wondered that, how can we make non-family generals like the ones you come with in the beginning? I love them, but unfortunately they die some day...
And vanilla inheriting system sucks. RTW was way better, you could really make a pureblood sucession there.

If you allow the training of bodyguard units in castles/cities (high tier would be most realistic), you will get generals. That's what I see in Custom Campaign Mod (and Rome BI).

@H Con - is that easily moddable? I.e. do i simply have to change a state to 'yes' or 'allowed' or something in a game file? (just incase you happen to know!)

You can just edit the export_descr_buildings file (you need to unpack the game). It covers unit recruitment in buildings, so you can just add generals to that. Or you can add generals as mercenaries if you want, but the AI tends to snatch them.

btw if you want your family pure, why not accept the Man of the Hour but simply not let him get married? Just treat him as any old general. Sure he might end up being the faction heir for some time, but if he has no children then one of his step-nephews will take over eventually.

After you've unpacked the game (the unpacker is in the tools folder), you go into the data folder. It's in the bottom of this folder.

yeah i tried opening the unpacker, but nothing actually happened. I got the questions about whether or not i wanted to continue, and i said yes, (or at least typed 'y' and then hit enter...) but then he unpacker closed and did nothing. very odd.

Just find the building which you want bodyguard to be recruited in (King's Stables or somesuch) and add it in. You'll see other units which can be recruited there; their entries look something like this
    Code:
    recruit_pool "Town Militia"  1   0.2   2  0  requires factions { Normans, }
So now instead of Town Militia put in a bodyguard unit (e.g. NE Bodyguard. You can take the unit name from the export_descr_unit file found in the same directory) and tweak the respawn rates, factions, etc. as you wish.
