    Icon5 Mongols in 1500 and 1600's

What happened to the Mongols then? I hear they invaded China in the 1600's, but got mopped aside by the Chinese armies.

The horse cultures of Central Asia were doomed once firearms became widespread and sea routes between Europe and Asia were opened.

After the Mongol Empire collapsed, a number of successor states were formed that either warred with eachother and were destroyed or simply decided to pursue their own path and simply fell in to obscurity. The exception to this rule would be the Timurid Empire (which was very brief) which conquered all the way in to Anatolia and then disintegrated which made way for the Mughal Empire which existed mid-way in to the 19th century. The successor states would gradually integrate in to their surroundings which basically meant that soon enough they wouldn't be truly "Mongol" having been settled down in the conquered lands for generations.

The Tatars that had once ravaged so much of the Russian principalities largely settled down in the southern steppes of what became Russia and Ukraine following their defeat at the hands of a resurgent Muscovite state, where they lived a largely pastoral life or became Cossacks (like the Nagaybak), until they were swept away or destroyed by the Stalinist regime.

the Mongol empire in China (self-proclaimed Yuan dynasty) retreated to northern mongolia after Ming unified China proper. The funny part is they still kept calling themselves Yuan and continued to say they were hte rightful owner of China (claiming mandate of heaven) and clashed with Ming until Manchus occupied them.
