Sorry if its a newbie question, but is there a way for you to give a name yourself to the legions?

Yea.. I know about the settlement name.. Juz wondering if it could be done for legions too..
If you are willing to do intermediate level modification, then yes. Just edit a few lines of text for the desired unit you want the name changed. Be aware that if you change for example Legio I Germanica or whatever to
Legio I thedudederek, then you will still have it saying Germanica in the description.

TBH, tha Legion naming system in BI was lame and unhistorical. The Legions in RS have their REAL names.![]()

Yes indeed. It was coded into descr_regions.txt so that if you recruited a 'Comitatensis' unit in that region (the Late Empire Legionary), it would have a subtitle "Barborum' or whatever that it got from that region. It could be transferred into RTW I suppose...but in any RS mod it would be ridiculous, because the Legion units in RS have the real names of Legions, and this would add a name that would make no sense.
But, as you can see here:
Caledonia

From the BI descr_regions.txt, this is where the name comes from.. Then the unit itself in EDU.txt is given an 'attribute called 'legionary_name', like so:
type comitatenses first cohort
dictionary comitatenses_first_cohort ; Comitatenses First Cohort
category infantry
class heavy
voice_type Heavy_1
soldier comitatensis_first_cohort, 60, 0, 1.2
officer roman_centurion
officer roman_standard
attributes sea_faring, hide_forest, can_sap, hardy, command, legionary_name <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

stat_health 1, 0
stat_pri 11, 3, pilum, 45, 2, thrown, blade, piercing, spear, 25 ,1
stat_pri_attr prec, thrown ap
stat_sec 10, 4, no, 0, 0, melee, blade, piercing, sword, 25 ,1
stat_sec_attr no
stat_pri_armour 11, 10, 6, metal
stat_sec_armour 0, 4, flesh
stat_heat 5
stat_ground 1, 0, 0, 0
stat_mental 10, disciplined, highly_trained
stat_charge_dist 30
stat_fire_delay 0
stat_food 60, 300
stat_cost 2, 1500, 680, 120, 180, 1200
ownership empire_west, empire_east, empire_west_rebels, empire_east_rebels
This cohort, when recruited, will take it's name from the region it's recruited in from that line in descr_regions.txt. Quite simple, really.

Couldn't it?
You could cut the number of unit spaces needed from 35-20 to 5 or six.
Besides 1.5c was rediculis with a Trajin rised legion being recruitable in a game that ends 14 AD.
Having BIs named legions means that problems solved.
I prefer the current RS system. Because if you recruit one legionary unit its legion name would be Legio I Italica (for example). But if you recruit another one, the legion name would be Legio II Italica. It would mean that you can have 10 legionary units with Legio I Italica, Legio II Italica, Legio III Italica ... Legio IX Italica, Legio X Italica... instead of 10 units of "Legio I Italica". If this could be fixed then the legionary naming feature would be very good!![]()

Actually, you could do that by naming the city (region) the name of the Legion name you wanted.

You would do it like this:
Caledonia <<<<<<<<region name
legion: YOUR NAME HERE <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Dal_Raida <<<<<city name
celts
Pictii
111 111 0
slaves
5
5
In every region in 'descr_regions.txt'. Be sure to delete map.rwm after changing them.
Then this:
attributes sea_faring, hide_forest, can_sap, hardy, command, legionary_name <<<<<<<<<
For whatever unit you want to get the name.

cant seem to find the descr_regions.txt
we must delete map.rwm?? before it can work? wont affect the game?
