Default What Framerate should I be getting in Napoleon?

    i7 920 OC'd to 3.31
    6Gb Corsair Dominator
    Radeon 5850 video card
    Hanns G 28" monitor 1920 x 1200 native

If I run everything on ultra/max and check all the boxes, I am at about 25fps. When I go down to 1650, still only 28 to 30. It seems to be less than what I was getting on Empire. I thought NTW was optimized.

Should I be getting more FPS? Any trouble shooting Needed?

You could lower some settings to increase your FPS if need be. There isn't really anything else you can do regardless of how it "should" run.

Total War games are pain in the backside to benchmark, I've found in M2TW that a frame rate of 12 was smooth enough that it didn't look like a slide show so if your getting around 30 FPS then I would be grateful. It also depends on what battles your running land or sea, the land battles with loads of men can tax you CPU to the limit (to the limit of the games multi-threaded capabilities) and zooming in and out can have a huge bearing on performance (slows down the closer you zoom) which I believe if down to the transition from sprites to polygons. As for you results I would say you have nothing to worry about.

ETW and NTW are the only games that rape my 260 to the point where im getting an average of 15-20FPS on huge land battles (Ultra all settings)

I found that 20 + fps is good on Total war, there might be some slow animations but who sits there watching your men fight?
Oh no the picture of my dog disappeared!

Its one of those boxes. I unchecked 2 of them and dropped it down to 1680 and I was getting 50 FPS when back a little bit and 30 when zoomed in on a giant melee.

Empire runs smoother at the moment as I can have everything checked and maxed, not sure why.

I think by "optimizing" they made the textures look better at lower levels from what I can tell. Because at full max there is alot going on in empire. The map in the Prussian Hills looked like a painting with the giant Oak trees turning color and I've had smoke so thick, I couldn't see anything.

Does the size of the monitor or refresh rate effect FPS?

Exactly, I asked him this before, it was a small screen with a low resolution.

Its a GPU bottleneck. I OC'd my i7 up to 3.8 and still doesn't get much better fps everything maxed out and checked on 1920 x 1200.

I think there is just too much going on with everything and then having a larger monitor. I do personally notice the frame rate problems when it drops below 30.

I may be different though than some people. I play with the action zoomed in alot. If I played with it zoomed out, there would be no real issues.

Correction: big screen with a small resolution. You must have to crank AA up quite a bit considering the resolution methinks.

When you zoom right in your video card is working overtime I found this was the same case in Supreme Commander when you zoom in I found the frame rate dropped a bit but would go back up when you zoom out. With TW games its to do with the transition from rendered polygons which are 3D to sprites which are 2D, if you play a massive battle with loads of men (try a huge battle with 12,000 units) you will find your CPU will start to be bottleneck as it can't keep up with all the A.I and pathfinding of course your video card will have more the cope with as well but the A.I can be a real killer.
