no smoke from guns

I just got the game today and ive played a bit of the italy campaign and two custom battles, and for some reason when the infantry shoot, there is no lingering smoke. They are shooting properly, and for half a second i see smoke, but only barely, much less than in the promo videos and even empire.

My computer isnt particularly good for gaming, but im playing at medium settings and i cant find any option to turn on smoke. Any help would be appreciated.

Since I don't own the game can you post a screen of the options>graphics settings menu? Its in the main menu/home screen.

ok try increasing the particle effects, and texture quality

its no good. Ive maxed out all of my possible settings and still doesnt work.

have you checked volumetric effects?

and HDR?

Due to the game-imposed limitations i cant check hdr or volumetric effects, but i didnt in empire either and it worked fine. It can't be that if you have only medium grephics settings then you get no smoke.

it can, but since volumetric effects is used for fog, it can be used for smoke, that's why I asked you to check it. sorry to hear that I didn't work out.

There was a thread with the same thing at .com and I can't find it, now. It was not resolved at that time.

Overall I'm impressed with the game. It looks better and runs smoother than etw. Although I am a little disappointed about FBR not being there.

However I am not getting ANY smoke from my musketry and mere wisps from my cannons. This could ruin the feel of the game for me. Whilst it may be more fun to play it will always annoy me that it could look so much better.

I've seen the screenshots of the increased volume of smoke in NTW and it looks bloody fantastic. Its pretty much what I wanted from ETW

So I suspect I'm not getting smoke effects because the High and Very High graphical settings are greyed out on my pc. My pc can handle itself on this game absolutely fine on medium. I dont see why I cant at least TRY to play it on high. But the option of doing that isnt there.

But really? NO smoke? At least on ETW you got smoke even on low.

I'd really apreciate any tips or suggestions to try and get this back in the game for me.

maybe you sould just close your eyes everytime someone fires.

try this. it works for NTW as well as ETW. you should be able to get high settings and therefor smoke. worked for me as I had the same problem.

If you cant see smoke, your video card cant do it.


trust me its there...

I think they do this out of consideration for lower end cards,for the smoke effects are INTENSE in this game,I believe 5X the particles of what was there in empire,and it lingers,hovers and floats all across the field,mixing that with the increased effects of impact and it would be a nightmare for lower end cards

I'm glad that the smoke effects get turned off, it would slow my laptop down to no end. I was afraid I might have to wait until the effect changing mods came out.

Seems like the lingering smoke and other effects are only enabled when "Particle Effects" are set to "Ultra". When set to "High" or lower, no lingering smoke. If I can recall, Ultra settings are only available on machines with DirectX 10 capabilities. Kind of weird considering the Blood and Smoke mod created lingering smoke on any machine.

how do you know if your machine is directx10 capable then? ive lost count of which one i happen to currently have installed. But i cant set my graphics to high or very high. they are greyed out. Is there anyway around this. I would really like to get smoke effects back
