It was one of the more ridiculous things in Empire - 2 militia units standing their ground against a full stack.
Has anyone experienced an appropriate retreat from battle by the AI?

Yes, I've experienced it first hand several times now.
Good, I think I've heard enough positives to buy the game now.
Just a shame Empire seemed to lack a lot of these already well established features from the series.....
Thanks for the response Zonkey
They both retreat and will press an attack against a lesser army of mine should I chose to retreat. I am very glad with the improvements this time around.
Armies can hide in woods on the campaign map again aswell. They have put int all the good features they forgot to add to empire again, really nice.
indeed. had a few understrength armies fall back instead of fighting. i forgot these things were even in Total War games after they were left out of Empire! hehe.
lol, gord, I'm hearing that!
Also the AI will often be willing to surrender a town if their is no hope of them defending it & they have plenty more territory left. I got the first 2-3 towns in the Egypt campaign surrender to me, but after that they started refusing to.
@LegioXGemina & Humble Warrior: Your loss
When a town surrenders, is the garisson free to leave the city? or do they just end up prisoners?
i also noticed when my army went through a patch of fog on the campaign map it went into "ambush mode". pretty cool.
I routed an army, but they had 2 full line infantry units in reserve that GTFO as soon as it was clear that the battle was lost. I tried to chase them with Dragoons, but they actually squared up. When I moved the Dragoons away, they proceeded to GTFO in an orderly fashion.
