General Assistance (A TW crisis!)

So...I have been playing MTW2 for about a year or so now, yeah I know I am little late to the party. I typically play a grand campaign, using either the Stainless Steel mods or Broken Crescent, however...I think it might be time for a change, but I just don't know.

I want to play Empire: Total War, but I have read nothing but bad things about it here and in other tw communities, I was initially interested in Napoleon: Total War but the whole concept seems a bit too short for my money (pun intended). Everyone here also seems to love Rome: Total War, save for that one dude who just posted a thesis on why it sucks (I am sure you have seen it) and I am not really interested in Shogun, cause imo that was the weakest title in the series.

So here is my dilemma, I don't want to play MTW2 to death, to the point where I hate it, and Civ IV is just no substitute for a good old fashioned total war. However, as we all know, humans can't just rollback to an older version of something without much strife and internal conflict...

I guess what I am asking is, what should I do with my TW career?

Should I continue on with MTW2 (are people even still modding this game) or should I move on with my life...or god forbid...move backwards?

Empire has improved a lot since its release, so I'd say it's defintely worth a try now. I personally enjoy the game very much since the mpc beta campaign has come out. And, if I were you, I wouldn't want to miss out on sea battles, tech research, colonies etc. ...

I've stopped playing the single player campaign though (after endless hours of fun - there are i.e. plenty of mods that add new units) due to the still quite buggy battle ai - after having played the grand campaign against a human a single player campaign seems to be such a boring waste of time to me. However, an upcoming patch for an improved battle ai is in the closed beta phase...
