First campaign for a new comer
I have played almost every campaign in XGM, and I am surprised to find that my M/VH Pergamon campaign is one of the easiest ones I've played. Certainly easier than my VH/VH Parthia campaign, where I am making steady but painfully slow progress.
My first step was to blitz the three Seleucid settlements near me. I took two of them by the second turn. I decided to take the Seleucid settlements because they were only guarded by a couple of units each, while the rebels had a decent army in each city. Once I had the three Seleucid settlements on top of my original city I had a ton of cash coming in and could expand my army.
The rest of Asia Minor was easy to take since it is split up among many waring factions. When you have done that you will be ridiculously wealthy. So, my advice for a new comer to XGM, start with a Pergamene campaign.

Re: First campaign for a new comer
This is my first non-barbarian campaign in a long time, I agree the start is really easy. It's certainly a less challenging campaign with landbridges off, especially considering how easy it is to take out Egypt via naval assault. Now to just deal with TSE spamming silver shields and thorakitai...

Yup, definitely. When I played my Pergamene campaign I don't think I was ever in danger of dying out or even losing a settlement. Once Antioch is taken, you can field troops that can stand toe to toe with the best of what the TSE can throw at you. Still was a fun campaign though - it's always fun to cut the TSE down to size.
