From what I watched on the livestream, I think NTW somehow looks alot more grittier and believable than ETW. One thing I noted was the colors. In ETW there were all these bright colors. It kills the immersion and make you feel like playing with toy soldiers. Just by changing the overall color tone, NTW suddenly looked a whole lot more appealing for me.

There was something similar in the earlier RTW-M2: RTW looks all cheery and even cartoony while M2 looks more tuned down and subtle. That's the one thing I liked in M2 over RTW, the color design. Maybe they have two design teams taking turns or something, but I really prefer the grittier team.

    What do you think?

Perhaps it's fitting. 18th century warfare is commonly referred to by historians as having been a gentleman's sport... whereas Napoleon brought the introduction of widespread nationalism, destruction, and total war. So it seems appropriate that this game should be "grittier."

Perhaps. And perhaps that's why people hated it, all that floppy gentlemenly stuff

...and I think the colonial wars weren't exactly neat and pretty.

European soldiers still wore flamboyant and colorful uniforms while fighting in their colonies. Take a look at the Battle of Quebec for example. Unless we're talking about the native vs. frontiersmen situation. But I thought the natives were presented fairly well in ETW.

Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener KG, KP, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCMG, GCIE, ADC, PC (24 June 1850 – 5 June 1916), was an Irish-born British Field Marshal and proconsul who won fame for his imperial campaigns and later played a central role in the early part of the First World War, although he died halfway through it.

    Totally agree with the OP.

The colours of the battle maps (terrain) and the general treatment of the campaign map appears much improved and far more realistic than Empire (though generally Empire wasn't bad for the most part). From what I've seen so far at least (awaiting UK release).

Looking absolutely fantastic IMO. Fingers crossed.
