Re-skin worked in Vista but not xp?
Hi there,
I cant get a Seleucid Cataphract re-skin to work somehow.
Following a skinning guide from this site ive copied the models_unit_textures.pak from the data/packs folder, then pasted it into new folder with the xpak.bat and xpak.exe files and extracted it into that folder.
Then i put the new DATA folder into my Rome:Total War directory and answered yes to replacing files, i then go into the data/packs folder and create a text file called models_unit_textures.pak and delete the original pak file.
Using photoshop i opened DATA/models_unit/TEXTURES/MOUNT_HORSE_CATAPHRACT_SELEUCID.TGA.DDS
And started editing away. I saved the file as DXT5 ARGB (as the guide said). But for some reason i cant see it in game. The old texture still shows when the old texture shouldnt exist??
The models_unit_textures.pak is deleted and the tga file (the one inside the DATA/models_unit/TEXTURES folder) has been edited.
I did the exact same thing on a vista machine and it worked fine (it was a seleucid militia cav tho)
Any ideas?

hello killadey...did you changed the desc_model _batle?if you donīt you have to do that....you can for exemple...if you want to change the "UNIT_ROMAN_HASTATI_JULII.TGA"...after you change the skin on photo..or gimp or etc you have to rename it...it can be "UNIT_ROMAN_HASTATI_JULIInew.TGA" in the desc_model_batle(you can use the wordpad to open it,then press ctrl + f and put hastati in there and ok and it will search the texture were you can modify the name...i use only "new".. ...then the skin is "activated" in the game...i do like this and it works...i hope this helps you.....only one thing....in my moods i unpack the file in the packs file,then i change the name of the ui_1.pak or you can save it somewere i use ui_1.pakn simply, then i open in the "data" folder a folder called " models_unit " were i put all the new cas files of the new or modified models( inside models_unit i open another folder called "textures" were i put the new textures made by me or other ) and finaly copy only the ui folder to put the new unit_info and unit cards of the new skins,it works for me...if in the new models there is spritrs i open in the data folder a folder called sprites were al the new models sprits go....its less complicaded then as you do...i hope that helps you...roma victor

Thanks for your reply hellequin,
I didnt edit the desc_model_battle.txt.
I shouldnt have too, its the same file, same name, same size ive just changed the colour of the pixels.
Its worked perfectly on my vista machine, and i did exactly the same thing, i even put the tga in question into my vistas data/models_unit/textures folder and it works fine on there.
Strangley i uninstalled RTW from my troubled pc, deleted the Creative Assembley folder and ran CC cleaners registry feature, i then re-installed the game again and all the pak files were already unpacked into the models_unit/textures and contained my edited TGAs?!?!
How is that even possible?
I just wanna keep the Vista Vanilla for playing and the Xp for modding, but ill back up my save files and just do it on the vista,
