    Default Cognomen Africanus

    Hey guys,

    i got three questions:

    1. What are the criteria to get the cognomen "africanus"?

    2. Can a character get this cognomen, if he's already "vanquisher of gauls" and already had gotten
    a triumphus?

    3. Can a character get more than one triumph?

My most important question is the first one.

    Thanks for answers

    Danny

what is a cognomen? do you mean an attribute?

and i think it is possible to get more than one Triumph. don't quote me on that though

AFAIK Africanus is received either by capturing Carthage or by winning hugely in Africa. I can't really say which of the two, because my general won three huge battles against the Carthaginians and then captured the city(and left it in ruins). He received the trait "Conquer of Carthago" and the agnomen Africanus, but I can't say when did he get it.

@iceblade cognomen is the nickname of the the Roman men, at least it started as a nickname, but eventually was used in everyday life as the third part of the name. "Caesar" was a cognomen. He was Gaius Julius Caesar, meaning Gaius of the Julii clan, Caesarian branch. Cognomens could also be hereditary, given as a recognition of a feat. Agnomens were a further cognomen. For example, Africanus(African) was the agnomen given to Publius Cornelius Scipio after he defeated Hanibal at Zama and forced peace terms on Carthage. His name was Publius and he was born in the Cornelia gens, Scipiones branch. Scipio Africanus was also a founder of the Africanus branch of the Cornelii Scipiones.
The scarcity of given names in ancient Rome meant that many men from one clan had identical names for generations, so the use of cognomens, even when they became hereditary, was desirable to distinquish them. The given name was used only intimately. For example, Caesar was known as Caesar to Rome, but his wife/mistress would call him "Gai/Stud/love machine".

It's like a point system, if you win enough battles and capture enough cities you get the cognomen, enslaving cities also counts towards it as well. As for replacing the Gallicus cognomen, I'm not sure but I think it would.

Ok, so my character should have gotten the agnomen "africanus" because he did conquer Kart-Hadast and he also enslaved the populace, but he didn't get "africanus".
    How can that be?
Note: He already was "Vanquisher of the Galli" and already had got a triumphus.

Like I said it's a point system so you just haven't got enough yet, you need 20 points to get the Conqueror of Carthago trait which gives the Africanvs cognomen.
Defeating them in a battle earns you 1 point, large battles 2, capturing their original cites will give you anywhere between 1-5 points and enslaving them will get you another 2.

Here's my Africanus as he heads home to Italy for retirement.

I don't recall what event actually triggered his cognomen, but my early strategy in this campaign was to raid and level the Carthaginian port cities several times.
