I am guessing zones of control, maybe no movement points, as a result, the army is destroyed. I have seen that happen in my campaigns specifically when they flank you.
I mean when I have the option of withdrawing, fighting it, or auto-resolve, during there turn, i hit withdraw and then my army just dies. and it can't be b/c of movement points b/c it resets..
I remember that happened to me more than once in the past when playing vanilla RTW. Unfortunately that's a defect inherent to the original game not only RS. The options says something like if you lose the battle (that includes retreating) your army will be destroyed.

If you notice, during the battle scroll, it actually shows a skull and crossbones of sorts that indicates that the army with this indicator will be destoryed. It often happens to armies too far from their homeland, or armies on enemy controlled islands. If you see that, I say fight it, no matter the odds! If you win, its awesome, if you dont, oh well.... you were going to die anyway.![]()
The skull is a big indicator that you're army can't withdraw....good thought. Also, movement points don't reset until the next turn, so if you marched up to the city and had little or no movement left, you can't withdraw. What it means, basically, is that your army doesn't have the movement points to get off the battlefield tile, so they all die as if 'routing'. It's all calculation in the Battle engine....

Sometimes, when you come to battle against an enemy, whether it be in the field or during a siege, you won't necessarily have the option to back out of the situation as easily you got yourself into it.
If the battle is against an equal or noticeably smaller force, go ahead and fight the battle yourself because 'Auto-resolve' isn't as fair a system as many would like. However, if the battle is against an opponent who's considerably larger or better equipped, you'll have to fight them regardless and you never know, you might pull out a heroic victory if you pick your strategy and terrain carefully. Sure as hell beats running off and losing the army altogether, if you die fighting and die well, your army could have dealt the enemy a significant enough blow by limiting their offensive maneuvers and given your other armies valuable time to gather and devise a strategy to defeat the enemy force. Though, if the army you're using is the only one you have, pray you have 0-turn recruitment, because you'll need a boatload of luck otherwise.

Happened to me tons of times also, whenever I'm going to a far away land trying to Conquer other Cities I always ended up Withdrawing and my Units somehow disappearing in the wind in the process, kinda odd especially because I don't see any Skull Cross on it. =/
