Default Romanian myth of Dacism - the historical origins of this.

Well first of all I agreed at not trolling Romanians with someone, but this is not trolling. This is serious debate about Protochronism, in other words, Romanian nationalism.

I have noticed that many local Romanians on this forum regard themselves as "Roman" and "Dacian". They claim this on the basis that the "pure" Romano-Dacis people somehow survived 2000 years without being "impurified" by foregin ethnicities (which they were, especially by gypsies according to some historical sources - not that this is a bad thing).

Well, here is an in-depth study on origins of the Daco-Roman myth. http://lett.ubbcluj.ro/~echinox/caiete1/23.html

I find the fact that Nationalism is so strong not only in Romania, but also in other countries like Zimbawe, worrysome

i have seen some members here overstating dacia, calling it "industrial heartland" of europe, the "second most powerful military force after Rome", "first place on earth to have writings" etc.

    according to OP's source:

"During Ceaušescu’s dictatorship, the virtually hegemonic force of national ideology ended up as an aggressive complex of superiority called Protochronism. Its main cultural statement was a boastful rejection of any sources, models or forerunners, in almost all-intellectual areas, in favour of a paradoxical theory of local priority, allegedly ignored, because of the marginal status of Romania.
It is important to note that the same distressing question: How can one be a Romanian? Should be posited as the ultimate source of Protochronism. This time by way of compensation, being a Romanian becomes a privilege, a miracle and bliss. In Ceaušescu’s Romania, the “pride of being born Romanian” was the obsessive keynote of all official discourses
In attempting to identify the first roots of Protochronism it is probably necessary to go as far back as the decades between the two world wars and focus on Mircea Eliade, another displaced Romanian.
From this point of view, the Protochronist reaction is therefore ambiguous and double-edged. On the one hand, it is a clear statement of a deeply felt inferiority complex to the advanced Western Europe. On the other hand, it is a proud rejection of the imperial model of the Soviet occupant. In this case, the barbarity is that of the conqueror, the latter becoming from the carrier of civilization to be exact opposite. This is the explanation for the various elite intellectuals’ (the prestigious Edgar Papu, for instance) brush with Protochronism. "

this might explain some of the members' not so historical views on dacia.

    because :

    1. No Romanian says he is "pure blood" Daco-Romanian, we claim cultural heritage (this implies only partially genetic heritage that means little in my opinion).

    2. You are trying indirectly to make Romanians "gipsies" with a racist intent.

    3. Somehow you link Romania with Zimbabwe with the intent to insult us by comparing Romania with a failed third world country.

Don't worry, there is no terrorist organization in Zimbawe. Although there is no guarantee that people there would not robe you, or even kidnap you.

Ugh, I think I speak for the entire VV when I say: can you shut the up Kirov?

Also, "Romano-Dacis" people LOL! At least bushbush had the decency of reading the wikipedia article he was quoting before trolling us.

You're better treated there if you're Asian than if you're white. But good luck trying to cope with the living conditions - and - show us a picture of "before" and "after" .
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."

This has become a bit spammy (starting with the first post). This is also not a chat thread about "what I did over the summer".

If this is going to be a serious (non trolling) discussion of history, I think some sources to support a claim and not involving suppositions of what members believe might be a good start.

Until this is answered to my satisfaction,
