Toying around with border defenses while watching something on tv about the Germans invading Russia in WWII. They went on about the roads being terrible and slowing down the advance. Taking this idea and running with it, I have been intentionally avoiding upgrading, or even making, roads to slow the advance of invaders. This would just be in border provinces and not serious economic zones.

Works pretty well in eastern Europe where there are large provinces. Also good if you take Persia and want to use it as a cork between the Indian Theater and the European Theater.


Just a thought, take it or leave it.

I've thought about this. Roads greatly facilitate the movement of my armies. ------But they also facilitate the movement of my enemies armies.

In my particular case though I obsessively play Austrian faction. And Austria really needs the benefit of being able to move rapidly via interior lines. Indeed, I've even been known to give the minor German states the money and tech to upgrade their roads so I can move quick in Germany.
Also Austria is a continental power, if I try to spam trade ships and milk the trade nodes I always lose.
It takes Austria 30 years to build a fleet that has some hope of defending overseas trade.
Anyway, it seems like no matter how I build up my continental possessions, Austria is always short on cash. So I build the roads for the money if nothing else. Or maybe I'm just a bad economist.

You mentioned one of the few areas where I would, deliberately, hold back road construction ; Persia.

Actually, as I play colonial style,(which means "raping natives style"), it doesn't make a difference because:1. They are on roads which I can see and then I can rape them.and 2. I am more of on the offensive. I just rest my army for 2 or 1 turn before continuing(raping natives is easy)
