Defeating Rhun cavalry

Hi,

Im quite new to this game. I started my first campaign under the Dale faction, but whenever I engage in battle with the Rhun, their cavalry completely wipes out my army, which is pretty much what their army is composed of. What units and strategies should I use against them? My army was composed mostly of infantry and spearmen, since they have a bonus against cavalry, and I brought a couple of units of cavalry myself. I only brought 2 units of archers.

Use your general and maybe some longbowmen or woodsmen to weaken their cavalry before they charge. Use spearmen to counter their charge and charge in your ap units such as dalesmen and axemen to finish the job. Maybe charge in your cavalry after you have done this, I would not suggest to use your cavalry to counter their Kataphracts directly, but use them as support troops and to finish off their nasty missile units (such as Balchoth Horde).

Early game, any faction is going to struggle against the Rhun BGs. Those guys wipe the floor against any other unit. You stakes to channel them onto your spearmen and kill them with AP units. There's not much else you can do. I find arrows to be quite useless against these guys.

I'm playing as Dale, so I don't have any spearman, and neither do I have stakes. Also, what are AP units?

The stakes are a special capability of longbowmen (and other archer units) that must be deplayed during the set up of a battle - so care must be taken when placing your archers if you wish to use this capability.

You have spearmen.
And I found the BGs quite easy to destroy as Dale. Massive archer fire and they're down quite fast.

Anything with a nice big axe helps. Beornings, Dalesmen, Halberds, ...

Its always option to make their cavalery weaker (just edit descr_units.txt)
but dont forget, that ll make game imbalanced...

In next RR/RC update their numbers as bodyguards have been reduced.

Try to avoid their destructive charge if you can, or get them to charge your spearmen. If you can't, when your guys are going to get charged, run they away from the cavalry in spread-out formation. this is quite the opposite of what the adviser tells you, but it's actually the smartest thing you can do. their cav will kill only a few guys in the charge, and then stop and take out their swords. when they do, turn your guys around and rush your other battalions upon them. don't forget the put off spread-out formation. they'll get isolated and, will still kill a whole bunch of your guys, but they'll go down eventually.

with spearmen of less quality, it's best you do this aswell.

And yes, spearmen and AP infantry and AP archers are best to use against them. As gondor, fontain guards (elite AP spearmen) utterly slaughter them.

You should see my Dale formation against Rhun in the old thread back in Guides/Resources

Have Spearmen in the middle mixed with infatry. Have your Cavalry protect the Left and Right flanks and Archers behind the spearmen. This is much like the

Gondor formation except that you should have significantly more archers. Recruit a lot of low tier archers and punch holes in the Rhun main army which early on

would be composed of medium infantry. Once their ranks are weakened assume a defensive position and try to defeat their charging cavalry with your spearmen-

and stakes if you have them. you don't wanna make your formation too long because their charge would rip your formation right in two if you make them too thin.

I usually don't find Rhunnic Cavalry very hard to defeat with Dale. Only thing is that they send their infantry units to fight my army which makes me forget their

archers who rains death to my troops and takes a lot of time to kill them.
