What exactly is going on under the hood in regards to battles? How does the game calculate morale, stamina, and such things as how violent a charge is (determining how many soldiers go flying in the air, etc.)? What is occurring when two soldiers in opposing formations are hacking at each other? Do individual soldiers have stats like in an RTS game or is it simpler than that?

Mostly it is the EDU (export_descr_units) that houses the stats that makes the battle. In combination with animations and skeletons, you can change the way battles play out. Though I can't answer what number does what, you'd have to ask Mcantu or Quinn Inuit

for attacking units there is a formula based on EDU stats that determines hits/kills.

morale and stamina are defined in the EDU. charge effects are based on the mass value of the two units as well as that of their mounts (if any)

Oh, I see. Is the formula pretty complicated or straight forward? There would have to be some kind of randomizing factor, or else no soldier would die in the first charge or in the first volley.

And the mass value changes according to the charge mechanics? (cohesion of the charging formation; direction; distance of the charge; etc.?)
