Default Post here reconstructions of ancient cities, monuments

I would like everyone to post the reconstructions of historical cities that can be found on the web. I prefer they are modern recontructions, not old stamps, etc. Please try not to post too bigger images (if so put them in spoilers) but also not thumbnails.

Some recontructions of historical cities I could find :

Vindobona, the Roman city that preceded Vienna

Londinium - modern London in the times of Romans

Lutetia - modern Paris in the times of Romans

these are really nice...they are based on findings right?
Archeologists memorize the city planning of a civilization and guess the locations of certain buildings.
Easy findings are theathers, cemeteries and palaces. From there they think/guess the rest of the city.
"Therefore I am not in favour of raising any dogmatic banner. On the contrary, we must try to help the dogmatists to clarify their propositions for themselves. Thus, communism, in particular, is a dogmatic abstraction; in which connection, however, I am not thinking of some imaginary and possible communism, but actually existing communism as taught by Cabet, Dézamy, Weitling, etc. This communism is itself only a special expression of the humanistic principle, an expression which is still infected by its antithesis – the private system. Hence the abolition of private property and communism are by no means identical, and it is not accidental but inevitable that communism has seen other socialist doctrines – such as those of Fourier, Proudhon, etc. – arising to confront it because it is itself only a special, one-sided realisation of the socialist principle."

They are reconstruction by artist based on archeological finding or old maps. Of course they are not 100% exact but it's nice to really see how a city was centuries or milenniums ago.

real life drawing of city of Kaifeng (song capital) in year 1085-1145. Not modern reconstruction.

It's a VERY LONG painting. --- 500+ meters. It's very detailed as well, you can see the names of the store, the group of children playing, the merchants from all over the empire, etc.

you can see the whole thing in that flash. here are some portions of it, it's one of the best sources to study everyday life of imperial china. It's like a photo taken in that era.

other portions you can see here:

i heard rome's city planning was notoriously bad though, cuz it was on a bunch of hills and it grew over time, instead of being planned ahead.

Roma was massive and grew fast and beyond anything seen before. Of course it had many problems.
But when ever new settlement was planned by Romans, it had a square grid of streets wherever possible.

The more interesting aspect is just how it degenerated in the Balkans in Late Antuquity. Apparently by the 6th century it was hard to find any two roads that intersected at right angles, and most cities were centered around churches. Bishops became the most powerful administrative figures in cities. It's really interesting how you can see the change in material culture.

That's hardly Balkan thing. It's simply medieval European way. Cities were small and fortified, rarely on open plain. They were cramped, and they were evolving with very little architectural administration. People were building houses wherever they could inside the walls, and so streets were getting more random and narrower.

As for the churches, that's actually rather Roman thing as their temples were also on the Forum, in the center. They were converted to churches. Also churches were central locations of public life. It's quite natural they have central position.

There was no city planning for Rome because Rome grew organically from a few hilltop villages before there was city planning. However in time there was systematisation.

Anyway Rome was something in it's own category in Antiquity incomparable with any city in the world

Not true, in terms of size it was equalled and indeed surpassed by Chang An, Constantinople, and later Baghdad, which achieved over double the population of Rome just 500 years afterwards. Rome was the biggest city in the world for only a short 200 year period.

A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."
