Default Lethality - could anyone explain?

I've come across this term on both the forums and the document viewer, and I have no idea what that means.

    So... what is it?

Sorry if this question has been addressed earlier.

Lethality indicates how likely a hit is going to kill the target, instead of just knocking it down.

For EB, the stats are kinda like this:

The bigger the sword, the more Dakka.
However, it is not unusual that high lethality weapons have low attack (due to their being unwieldy) and thus don't have a very big chance to hit in the first place.

The guy in my avatar is one of the three most deadly infantry units in the game, due to extreme lethality combined with decent attack, AP, and armour.

There are several parameters for melee weapons:

attack delay - the frequency of attack moves (cavalry lances are the slowest).

lethality - see above. Only applies to melee weapons. Generally two-handed weapons and longswords have high lethality, as do axes and maces. Cavalry lances have the highest values.

attack damage - the higher the damage, the likelier the hit, whether deadly or not. "Fast" weapons like short swords usually have high attack, at the cost of lethality. Cavalry lances are lowest.

armour piercing - only half the target's body armour is taken into consideration. Restricted to maces, axes, clubs, hammers, elephant tusks, underhand cavalry lances, two-handed swords, and falxes.

Lethality is given in decimal format - the .4 of Lances means that they have a 40% chance of killing a unit in any given hit - rather, of removing one Hit Point, as there are multi-HP units. All Missile units effectively have 1 Lethality, IIRC, which is what makes experienced Slingers deadly.
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.
