Super Romans?

i am currently playing Europa Barbarorum 1.1 (older version i know but oh well) and i am playing as the Romans. I have been pushing south, was able to take all of southern italy, and i pushed into Sicily. However during a battle at Messena i noticed my armies literally were unstoppable. I sent 4 units of Histati alone through a gate (had been opened by a spy) they pushed through 3 units of hoplites (while taking only 50 casulties across all 4 units) and repulsed another unit of hoplites and 2 units of calvalry. Overall i took about 85 casltuies and was able to take out about 400 enemy, and i was wondering, is Rome going to be this overpowered against every enemy i come across? cause if that is the case im gunna switch to a weaker faction, cause if one of my weakest unit types is able to push through elite hoplites and cavalry with minimal casulties it's not fun.

In my experience Roma has better quality troops in all periods in EB. Rome is pretty much the easiest faction in EB. Look at the difficulty when you choose your faction and you will have a harder time

It really depends on the hoplites. If they're the first type, those with no body armor, they're weaker than the hastati in principle. Also in a melee the defence skill is much more important than the shield defence, which is the basic defence of the hoplite. IIRC The spears have lower mortality than the gladius and there's one more thing, very important - hoplites are spearmen, they have a +8 bonus against cavalry but suffer a penalty of IIRC -6 versus infantry.

Was going to say, not sure which kind of hoplite you are fighting against, but in my experience with Rome, when fighting against normal 'hoplites' and those mercenary ones, its a pretty fair fight. I'm also on version 1.2, so it might be that too.

Levy hoplites are usually quite , but the normal ones are quite dependable, I use them a lot in my own armies.
