    Default Protectorates

I Just can't seem to get any nation to become my protectorate. I've tried using This Guide to getting a protectorate and it just doesn't seem to work. I'm playing on H/H right now with great Britain, I've taken France, Alscance-Lorraine, and Flanders. I get Westphalia to emerge from the Rhineland by taking it from the prussians and then moving my force out and letting it rebel. Move my guys back in and kill their entire army except for their town watch, offer them flanders, alscance, all my tech and 10,000 and they still won't become my protectorate. They offer me a peace treaty during their turn, but when I try to negotiate the peace treaty to include protectorate status, they decline. Can anyone help me with ideas that I could try?

westphalia can't emerge from rhineland, only Hessen can . And I know it's very hard to obtain a protectorate but it usualy works with giving them a stupid region somewhere in the bush-bush of america.

might have changed with one of the updates though, didn't get protectorates in ages!

This mentioned guide is already old and worked until last two patches (1.4 & 1.5).
After the latest patch the diplomacy changed so much that its nearly impossible to get any Protectorates.

    Cheers

I was able to get Venice to be my protectorate as the Ottomans, but I had to:

    1. Isolate them to a single province, Venice
    2. Destroy pretty much the entirety of their armies, which was about 1 1/2 stacks
    3. Raid all of their towns
    4. Blockade their port

They stopped producing any military units after this, as I suspect they were busy with the upkeep of their "fleet," which consisted of ships that couldn't possibly hope to compete with my rates. I had them in the most inescapable corner, and I don't recall offering Venice anything other than to become a protector. The turn after, I gave them some credits so that they could at least rebuild a bit to become a nice buffer while I focused elsewhere.

The only way I got a protectorate was by giving them 100,000 and then they got conquered by Austria!

A faction can only be made a protectorate when it is down to just one state.

March your army as close to his capitol as possible and park it on one of his resource towns.

This will - hopefully - provoke the garrison in his capitol to leave the capitol and attack you.
If he does, smash that army. Usually it will retreat to a far corner of the state --not back to the capitol.
He now has zero troops in the capitol.
With zero troops in the capitol, with your full stack army able to march in to the capitol in that turn, offer him 1000 gold.
In my experience they always except protectorate when they have zero troops in the capitol and you give them 1000 gold.

You can also get protectorates out of people you aren't at war with...just offer them a lot of money, military access, and maybe some garbage regions.

i sometimes find protectorates useless, unless they give you extra income, if they do I've never noticed

They give you a little extra income, but the real advantage is that it seems to neuter the aggressiveness against you. They seem pretty docile after accepting protectorate status.

Yeah, in my Prussia campaign I made almost everybody in the world my protectorate and even though they all have -300 relations with me they don't attack.
