i bought a retail CD version..Why do i still need steam?

I'm having problem with steam apps since the newest ETW updated came up.. updating 70% for 5 days ( i off my PC sometimes ) 54.0mbps wireless -- 70% i opened up this morning hoping to continue update
then it hanged for a while dowload stopping --- download starting ---- updating 0% .. how big is this updated 6G? M2TW? man.... i got the retail hardcopy ---- i try sometimes going offline mode avoiding stupid updates or turning off automatic updatez -- THIS GAME is NOT READY TO BE PLAYED IN OFFLINE MODE? i got antivirus guard turned on and firewall no problem with other applications such as torrents.. only this steam should be remove and update should be downloable ingame.. Singleplayer , Multiplayer , UPDATE , Online , Options , Exit / Quit Game...i have been trying to chase this update for two weeks just to play again.... man..

The original size is 15.3gb. With the updates, I hear 16gb.

Do you have the disc in the drive when you try to update?

nope i update without and can play without disc good thing with TW . Does it need a disc1 or disc2 inside cd rom? in order to update properly? Steam -- Empire : Total War Properties Disk Usage 15091 Mb
i played it last time got 1.4 is my latest patch.. until feb 8 update
anyways sir do i need to insert disc while having updates? i am registered at steam with my product key of ETW

You dont actually pay for the dvds, you pay for the serial code. The dvd's are useless even if the game did work, because you can also just download the game files from steam servers. This game is steam powered, so there's no way to play the game legit without steam.

If you don't want the newest update, then turn automatic updates off in steam, then restart steam, try to delete local game content and then verify integrity of cache files. Or do a complete reinstall. I'm not sure about all this because i always update my games when theres an update available, but i guess you can avoid the update by doing this. But understand that you won't be able to go multiplayer, because everybody else got a newer version now.

If you do want the newest update, then just let it download. You don't need the retail dvd's, because as i said, they are useless except when reinstalling the game (to avoid having to download all install files from steam servers). If you're experiencing problems with the update, then restart steam a couple of times, reinstall the game, let your computer run all night, just try different things. Changing steam download location may also help, as well as opening ports when youre using a router.

I tried to connect my pc directly to my modem instead of going wireles through my router.

It's not all Steam. It's also the internet protocals built into this game.
