I don't buy the argument that it's much more complex to program quality AI for gunpowder-based warfare than pre-. You see most of the human players in those videos using the pretty simple tactic of building a backbone of 3 units of line-soldiers who remain stationary for as long as they can, near enough to the arty to defend it. The AI sends individual cavalry and skirmish units into firing range, where they become confused and mill about until they are shot to pieces, before engaging in an ineffectual melee attack.
Couldn't the BAI be based around choosing a formation (based on an assessment of the relative strengths/weaknesses of the two armies) and advancing or remaining in position in formation? When the human player decides to attack, the BAI should respond to this with a limited number of units from the flanks of its army.
You get the feeling CA try to be too clever for their own good, programming cavalry to try to get behind the player's units and skirmishers to try to make ingenious probing attacks: - wonderful in theory, but in practice they get confused and the units are simply thrown away.
If the AI were based around the idea of remaining in formation, it would offer a solid fight 80% of the time. As it is, it offers a reasonable fight 30% of the time (IMO) and a human-like engagement 10% of the time (thanks to random elements coming together). I would happily lose that 10% of spectacular engagements to not see individual units acting like headless chickens.
I'm a positive person. I'm practically looking for an excuse to buy this game, knowing how much time I've spent with the previous titles. But I don't care about graphics, and wouldn't be happy with the game if I felt I'd been daft to purchase it.
Some people's response to this may be, 'but it's a beta version, maybe they worked hard on the BAI after this.' This would reflect poorly on CA in my opinion, that they think the AI is something that can be left until the final month or so, after the fancy shader effects have been developed over ten months.
I hope that Darth's review (or another Total War fan's) contradicts the impression these gameplay videos left me with.
