download 1.6 or wait for 2?

I got the Total War Anthology this month. I'm working through the games. Right now I'm having a cracking good time playing Empire Total War and Medieval 2 with mods from this great site! I'm looking to get my monies worth out of Rome Total War. The game is pretty old I guess but I just saw the sweet Centurion trailer and I'm hyped up about being able to play romans. I've looked over the forum and Roma Surrectum (and SPQR) looks like the mod for me. Great work btw on your mod. I love the idea of being able to choose named legions and the roman skins. I saw some of the other mods, e.g. Rome Total Realism and Europa Barbarum, but their Roman units are all wrong and well dont look like Romans at all (running around in shirts lol and funny unroman helmets and not rectangular shields so unhistorical). This mod though has beautiful Romans wearing what Romans are supposed to wear. Big props to your team.

I'm not too clear on the status of this mod. So 1.6 is out, but it doesn't contain the cool Roman units just previewed am I correct? However reading the preview thread the version (II) with the Romans will come out very soon? A beta version is already playable but I can't find a beta link to download (I tried those posted in the preview thread but they were bad links ). I don't want my first play of Rome Total War to start off with a sour note, because it is pretty dated. Should I download 1.6 or wait for 2.0, or is there an ETA release date for me to make up my own mind? I can play Empire Total War in the meantime. Oh and just putting it out there: would it be possible for me to play version II early? .

Also has anyone been watching Spartacus: Blood and Sand? Great show. A big reason why I bought the Anthology version over just regular Empire Total War.

1.6 dose not have all the badass units previewed for RS2. But it dose have some nice new battle terrain. Not only dose it look way better than vanilla terrain, but it's designed to make battles a bit more challenging. So yes it is worth playing to hold you over for RS2.

The Marathas are quite a fun campaign. That should keep you occupied long enough.

Firstly, welcome to forums.
I'd just like to say that Europa Barbarorum is the most historically accurate and most detailed mod for Rome Total War ever released. The EB team had REAL historians spend literally thousands of hours researching everything. Archeological evidence, literature, books etc. You name it, they've studied it. They know what they're talking about. And those Roman units are Camillian units. They're not the chainmail wearing ones from the Polybian era. Those reforms only occurred after wars with Carthage and the Celts. And those mods incorporate this change. Along with the Marian reforms and the Imperial reforms.

Basically i'd wait for RS2. I do highly recommend though that you download Europa Barbarorum. Chock-a-block full of historical detail and accuracy. Not saying RS is bad. In fact its an amazing mod. But they're different. RS is about a fair bit of realism, big armies and big battles and big empires. Europa Barbarorum is about carefully managing your economy, provinces and your armies and fighting pitched battles that can determine whether you lose your campaign or not. So in that respects, they are very different. SPQR just goes beyond RS in terms of battles. Even bigger armies, more of them and LOTS of battles. But for that it sacrifices unit variety and a LOT of historical detail. Still a terrific mod nonetheless and very fun to play.

Just because the Romans don't look a certain way, doesn't mean its not historically accurate. And if you just want cool looking, overpowered Roman armies - get SPQR. You'll have tons of fun.

I was merely trying to point this out. And Dog Fart, maybe for you it is. But everybody has different opinions. And i never said Roma Surrectum was not fun, or a bad mod. I love it. I have 1.6 installed right now. And i personally cannot wait for RS2.

I would say download RS 1.6 and have a go. What do you have to lose? It's true that RS 2 is "soon" to be unleashed but that doesn't take away the fact that RS 1.6a is a tremendously good game.
Also try out RTR, EB and as many other as you can. They are all well crafted mods that deserves any players attention.

If you haven't looked through all the preview threads then 1.6 will be great, if you have, nothing will compare to RS2.
If you can prove that you can play longer campaigns and that you are able of making a decent error report, with screenshots and all, you have every chance of playing the beta before release. Just check the Beta Testing topic to apply.

About that Spartacus series, I'm guessing that it relates to the slave revolt of 73BC?
If so then (judging from the trailer) it is that series that is totally historically inacurate, at that time the lorica segmentata was far from being common let alone standard equipment (I believe it wasn't even invented yet, not sure though), the same goes for the square shields and the helmets.

These kinds of 'hollywood' productions are made for people like you who only know the square shields and the segmentata armour, so who can blame them... not me at least, at some point when the series is done I guess I'll be watching some ripped version of it.

Welcome to the forum. Even if RSII came out tomorrow I still would download it and play it for the few hours. Its that good. I've played RTR and liked it, and EB and Like it but I perfer RS's look, esp the Main Map. So yes download 1.6a right now!!!

It'd probably be a good idea to d/l RS 1.6 to get a feel for the mod, because it still has nearly all of the units from RS 1.5 included but what the 1.6 patch introduced was better looking terrain during battles, the same type of terrain that will be included in RS2. It'll be some time, even after all the work the modders and beta testers have put into the mod to this point, until RS2 is released. Believe me when I say it, all you need to do is look around for the faction previews for RS2 before you realize just how gorgeous the final product will be, with all the mod's comprehensive improvements. The RS2 team has done such extensive work with the mod, you'll almost swear that it's an entirely new game.

Give them a few more months and it will have been well worth the wait.

the mods are awesome, my favorite is EB, but RS 2 will probably be my new baby after its released. Spartacus blood and sand? that show is crap all it that is has is sex and 300 style of over-kill violence with no historical accuracy or real story line. sorry bud, its just a bit sickening to people like me who read large books about Rome all the time and know whats supposed to be there.
