Icon5 Starting a Campaign, what faction should I choose?

I was wondering what would be a good faction to play with first, Im going with the "good side" humans, elves, dwarves. I was thinking of going with Gondor, also wondering if this mod is a good challenge? Please be honest with your answers based on your experience with it (on VH,VH). I played a VH battle using Gondor in Custom and obliterated a Modor army, they where a bit larger then me to.

Gondor for your first campaign oh yeah its a challenge alright . Yes gondors men beat hell out of the orcs but difference is for everyone you kill 2 more will come and then with harrod pushing from the south you will have to be good to make it .

My advice hit harrod first defend against mordor build your strength in the south good luck may the valar be with you.

Try the sub-mod RC/RR and see if the challenge is the same for you. Then try it with XBAI 3.4. I've got a slightly modified version to compensate for skirmishers. Head off to the Forum for some tips to make sure its integrated properly.

I would recomend Rohan or Dale, Gondor is far to tough if you are just beggining to play

People should just play whichever faction they want. It doesn't matter much unless you're completely new to TW.

The High Elves are an easy introduction to TATW. If you make an allience with the Dwarfs most of your cites will be far from any threat. And your early enemies Isengard and the OOTMM are not too tough.

IMO you should start with the High Elves, safe starting position, good fallback point in Lindon and decent units.

First time i played I used the dwarfs. The only enemy to worry about in the beginning are the MM orcs, as you can send some help to Dale to contain the Easterlings.

Well the Balcoth Tribesmen can be a real pain for a newbie.

I consider HE as the safest ''good'' faction you can play with. I wouldn't start with Rohan, because they can sometimes be a to play with, especially when you get an early invasion on Edoras.

if your going on VH/VH then I wouldn't pick gondor or rohan as you will get in trouble as soon as the invasions come - SE for a challenge but manageable

Well, if you want only good factions...

    Easy playable factions:

    High elves (Strong units.)
Silvan elves (Weaker than the high elves, still pretty easy.)

    Normal:

Dale (Pretty easy; But they need some time to get good units.)
Rohan (Easy, if you can use cavalry properly. Might become though, should an crusade, named invasion in this mod, be called on Edoras.)

    Hard:

Gondor (They get attacked by endless mordor stacks and by harad.)
Dwarves (Actually quite easy- But those damned skirmishers might cause you to throw your monitor out of the window.)

i agree with Lordinquisitor, if ur a newbie, but SE (silvan elves) are not weaker imho, when compared with HE, they dont have melee cavalary, but early on, if u need a charge the horse archers can charge those nasty snaga's quite easily, just dont let them fight in melee

their sentinels and wardens can hold their ground VERY well, just do hit-run tactics until ur sure u can send ur wardens in to finish the job w/o too many casualties

for orcs, it doesnt really matter how many you lose, but for elves it does more than any other faction, since they have less man in a battalion...

    And the replenishment rate sucks.

Well, imo the silvan elves are a bit weaker than the High elves, because they have neither heavy cavalry, nor mounted bodyguards, nor reliable infantry in the beginning. Especially mounted bodyguards are very good and are my most frequent source of heroic victories.

true but with SE thwey really hae LONG range missile, and if the enemy gets to close, i simply run back, split my forces, confuse the AI, and he stops for a moment, thats when i start to fire hell on them again

byt the time i see my troops are getting tired, their battalions have a few leftovers, i charge and they rout, max 100 casualties in full stacks, and thats when it goes slightly bad ><
