    Default The hoplite

So what is the best way to destroy a hoplite formation? Me I love using war dogs on them because they can move under their spears and break up the formation alowing my infantry to finish them.

Other phalanxes. As most factions, I hardly see hoplites, aside from militia hoplites, since the Brutii do a good job of killing them.

excuse me but Wardogs are probably the most retarded way to attack a phalanx. they cant run under the spears in the RTW engine.

Ranged units (particularly Siege Weapons) are quite effective, since the phalanxes are so large. Best melee strategy would be another (preferably higher-ranked) phalanx.
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

The best way to destroy a phalanx formation, is a direct frontal attack with cavalry

lol, well, seriously, I often just send some kind of cheap infantry to their front, and then flanking them with heavy infantry, and attacking with cavalry from the rear. That do work quite well.

Err... flank and surround with your own infantry?... perhaps a hammer and anvil or two?

    Did I won?

Yeah that is a great stategy! Another good way to do it is with Incendry Pigs they'll put the entire hoplite unit on fire, resulting in a horrible death for them.

Basicly the unit balance works like this: Incendry Pigs > Wardogs > Iberian Infantry > Everything else.

I can never use Incendry Pigs or Iberian Infantry, they are both useless. When ever I use pigs to attack they just turn around and attack my own men, and Iberian Infantry is so weak they just get crushed by everything.

Horse archers are the best way to avoid casualties, I think. That or a unit of elephants flanking. Failing that, skirmishers and another hoplite unit. Finally, heavy infantry and heavy cavalry. Though Stoferr may be on to something...

Archers. Any kind. Or missile units in general. I hate facing ranged units with phalanx units.

I think archers are the way to go. Maybe flanking them while they are engaged with your infantry with some calvary? This way your calvary wont be affected by the spears. I also like using chariot archers. Attacking egypt with the greeks is a hell i never want to re-visit. Thank god the selucids killed them off.....

Devastation from ten archer unit will crush any thing especially slow phalanx formation. Then if your archer run out of arrow use your own phalanx to hold them and your cheap archer to charge them from flank and rear.

Pikemen are good vs normal spear phalanx as their pikes are longer and they can start attacking and killing the spearmen a few seconds before being attacked back. with tough pikes like phalanx pikemen or silver shield pikemen you should be able to clean up most phalanxes.

firing arrows into their rear and charging into their rear with cavalry will kill alot and even if the charge doesn't rout them it will ruin their formation and you can send in infantry to clean them up if the cavalry cant.

For spartan phalanxes its massed missile troops or bust They only have 3 armour and will die quick to missiles.

and yeah i frigging hate Iberian infantry. horrible unit.

Are you saying a Royal can take on an Armoured Hoplite and win? Or are you saying they can only take on regular Hoplites?
