Default When do you recruit a new general?

    Hey!

For me this really depends from area to area and campaign to campaign, sometimes I just think my army is a little small to take that city and I recruit a general . While in other campaigns I spend way to much time on it and train particular units to have more chevrons, because I like the name of their captain and want it to be a good general with more than three stars .

I honestly don't. I don't recruit generals at all, ever. They're so expensive and serve absolutely no purpose to me at all aside from a maybe a few minor bonuses, but then again those bonuses can easily become penalties. So to me, generals aren't worth it. Those 2,500 credits could serve a better purpose, like a new brigade. Upgrade all my farms. Etc.

One general per stack -- since APE: TI doesn't use promotion I plan on training a general to replace another general when the general being replaced gets into his late 50's.

I then use his replacement general to quell rebellions and gain some traits before moving him to replace the older general -- as I RP a lot of the time when I play I never disband a general but allow him to return to a city fitting his achievement on the battlefield to grow old and die in.

That is if he didn't fail the Empire and cost us a loss, or more... then he goes to Siberia; whether I own it or not, lol!

I generally use 1 good general or 2 descent generals for each of my army groups, and when one dies I recruit another from the same army

Never! Like Isaristh, I think they are a bad deal.
They are expensive and if the general croaks *poof* goes that experienced bodyguard unit. I'd rather have an ordinary unit which won't disappear on me and that retains experience through decades of brutal warfare. Generals bodyguards have fewer men too, and can't be thrown in to a desperate fight against a superior enemy for fear he gets it. And he will. Those generals I start a campaign with frequently get skewered on a bayonet the first chance they get.

    Hi there.
One general in each army. But that also means that I replace them after one dies.

Usually in my offensive stacks. I try never to use more than one stack in a battle at each time, I prefer to have each stack be its' own balanced army. If I get in a big fistfight with a bunch of AI stacks, I have them give a good account of themselves and then let the second stack clean up.

I like to have one general per large army in each main front of my empire. (not necessarily in every territory). Definitely need one in each theater. I usually put one in a stack that gets to be bigger than 10 units. Or if it is an "expeditionary/offensive" stack then it gets a general.

    Recruiting a general? Huh?
I get generals when one of my captains wins a battle and gets adopted into the family or when one of my family member's sons comes of age.

    Oops. Sorry.
Guess I've been playing a lot of MTW2 recently...

I used to recruit a general now and then I guess, a couple in each theater. If one died I'd crank out another one, usuually from the best unit around.

One per each stack and as they die off. The bonuses they could potentially accumulate with experience helps out alot. Especially if they gain +morale bonuses or surgeon type ancillaries to help reduce casualties. And whoever said they keep losing their generals when they charge ought to know better not to throw them against any force. Bodyguards are there to keep morale and if have to, chase down routing units.

But that's my point. The general is unit who either dies or can't actively be used to decide the fight.
He boosts morale. You know what's good for morale too? Having that extra unit. Instead of a general I have an extra unit of infantry pouring enfilading fire in to the enemy. Might not do much for my morale but wreaks havoc on theirs.
