Default playing as the papal states?

i am in the process of trying to decide what faction to play for my next game and i happened to notice people mention the papal states before, are they a decent faction to play as? in all the threads i have noticed people mention playing them its always followed by a or a , is there something i should know?

i was also thinking about trying the Byzantines, they have what looks like a really strong roster, but it has alot of starting citys, im not used to having that many citys, seems difficult to manage

    thanks for any advice!

Papacy is boring to play. If wanna small state, try Atagon, Teuton Order or Sicily.

Sicily is not exactly small, and is perhaps one of the easier one to play.

Teuton Order or Knights Templar are the real small difficult ones.

Having said that, I didn't even know you could play as the Pope!

Papacy is too easy IIRC. In Vanilla I managed to take over the entire Italian peninsula with only a stack or two of papal guard on M/M or maybe H/M or maybe H/H

Papal Guard is basically spearmen on steroid. However, whenever I fight the Papacy, it's the Swissguard I fear most. They cut down everything!

how do we play as the pope?
I thought it was a bugged thing where playing as the papal states eliminates the use of the pope and also makes the game boring

It is very easy, but you'll have very limited options. In fact, the only benefit of being the Pope is that everyone you attack will be excommunicated. You won't be able to call crusades to your liking, nor will you be able to order ceasfires.
However, if you still want to play them: go to \Stainless_Steel_6\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign\ and open descr_strat.txt (using notepad or whatever). You'll see a list of factions under "playable" and a few others under "unplayable". Simply move the papal_states from the one to the other and you're done.

Plus, if you click on the buttons to do with the pope, the game will crash.

I'm afraid it ain't that easy the game will ctd if you try this, however if you want to play as Papal States you will have to change a number of files and i suggest you go to mod workshop and search for it.

Do I have to deactivate another faction like in custom battle?

For the Early Campaign: No. For the others maybe, but I don't think so.

ok, i can tell yall how to do it without modifying any files at all

start a hotseat, any faction will do, with cheats allowed, enter the console by pressing `

    type control papal_states

then type control *insert faction name here* that will turn over the faction you chose to ai control

    your done!

let me know if this does not allow you to do defensive battles, i can show you how to fix that, but it does require a quick edit in the files, but hopefully its unnecessary

me and my friend did a hotseat like this for around 30-40 turns, no crashing or anything, but then again, we play SS with no other mods, i dont know what will happen if you do this with RC/RR or anything

i have had fun in my game sofar, i have had a chance for a more peacful game than normal, and its fun manipulating other factions into fighting each other by doing things like, offering reconciliation for a minor territory, and then trading it off for certain "favors"

i guess im kinda like the mafia lol, i deal in favors

P.S - Especially with the latest RR/RC Compilation. Holy crap do their units look beastly.
