Hi there people, I'm trying to expand my knowledge in this area of music, currently I have a very varied taste in this going through bebop, hard bebop, and white jazz (west coast one) to Coltraine (by god he eludes me!)

I want to know what people are listening and what should I listen!

    Few names, old and young:

    The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble
    Gare du Nord

    Room Eleven
Caro Emerald (Just released her first album)
    Art Blakey & Jazz Messengers
Charles Mingus (I love 'Moanin' )
    Cannonball Adderley
    Club des Belugas
    Dave Brubeck
Wouter Hamel This is a real nice song IMO, but I'm not that impressed by the other ones.
    Love this one

    Hello!

My recommendation, seeing as how you've gotten into bebop, is to listen to the next major innovation, which is Modal Jazz. You've already touched on this with Coltrane. Another landmark exploration of modal jazz is Miles Davis' Kind of Blue album.

Here's perhaps the most well-known track from it:

Ah jazz! Love that genre, it's one of my favorites. My favorite sub-genres would be bebop, big band/swing jazz, cool jazz, and jazz funk. Generally, I like most of the sub-genres though. I wish jazz was actually due for a large mainstream comeback. Now it's pretty much been relegated to something of a niche genre, in my experience.

It's better this way, I think. Especially in the last decade. Look what happened to genres like R&B and indie rock when they became 'popular'.

I'd rather not see Jazz bastardised like that.

    @Fingon

I love Kyteman's 'Sorry'. What do you think of The Hermit Sessions, overall?

Overall I think it's an interesting album, it was a one-time venture and Kyteman himself will be focussing on new projects now, but I must say I was pleasently surprised by the quality and variety of the songs, I'm not a huge fan of (especially modern day) rap but in these songs it was really nice.
The main reason I like it a lot though is because I play trumpet myself and it's been a long time since the trumpet played an important solo part in a released album.
Of all the songsa on the album, I like Sorry most(wishing it was much longer) and the intro of It Circus is great as well.

My sentiments exactly. It's great to hear that Kyteman will focus more on different projects.

The parts where he played trumpet were easily the best of the album (Sorry is the highlight, of course). I hope he ventures more into jazz or other kinds of fusion (besides hiphop).

He's not very well-known is he? There isn't even an English wiki page on him!

For me personally it was because the only access I had to drums in high school was in Jazz band and we had 4 drummers taking turns on songs, so just sitting back and listening to what was being played (swing, big band, quartets etc...) made it just kind of grow on me. Found out about Nu-jazz because I accidentally came across it and the song I posted off the album was played at a store I was at a few weeks ago so it brought it back into my mind.

A thread about Jazz is slipping onto page 2, while one about 'Avatar' remains on page 1, in the Arts forum!

    We can't have that!
